A baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Emil R. Rasmussen
of East Main street, this city, on Jan. 25th.
Mr. and Mrs. Wm. J. Brown of Bluffton township are the parents of
a baby girl, born to them on Jan. 25.
Mr. and Mrs. W.L. Bohrer of Falls City, Nebr. returned home last
Saturday, after being here for the funeral of Mrs. Bohrer's
mother, Mrs. Caroline Storla.
Prof. Carlo A. Sperati is convalescing frm a week's confinement
to his home with a severe attack of flu.
Dr. and Mrs. Otto Glesne of Ft. Dodge visited over the week-end
with the former's parents, Rev. and Mrs. O. Glesne.
Mrs. C.W. Breyman and son Walter of Freeport, Ill., were here on
a visit to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.A. Lee, last week.
Mrs. Harold Spillman, sons Bobbie and Donald, returned home to
Fort Dodge last week after an extended visit here at the home of
her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Sorenson.
A sweet baby girl who tipped the scales at eight pounds and 13
ounces was born Thursday mornig, Jan. 28, at the Decorah Hospital
to Mr. and Mrs. Donald Flickinger of this city. She has been
named Cynthia.
Mr. and Mrs. F.E. Bryant and two sons arrived in Decorah
Wednesday night from Harvey, N.D., where they lived the past two
years, Mr. Bryant managing the Central Light and Power Co. He
resigned his position there and expects to remain in Decorah
indefinitely.
Colleen La Verne Halvorson, little daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Leonard Halvorson of Decorah, underwent an operation for acute
appendicitis at the Decorah Hospital last Wednesday afternoon.
Drs. Kuhn and Emmons performed the operation. The little girl,
who is not yet three years old, is recovering as nicely as can be
expected.
Miss Gladys Knutson R.N., who for the last four years has been
superintendent of the Virginia Gay hospital at Vinton, Iowa, has
resigned her position and arrived here last Wednesday together
with her mother, to make their home here again.
Mrs. Richard Rolfs, who went to Iowa City January 8th to take
treatments at the state hospital for a bad arm fracture,
sustained last November, returned home Monday night for a ten
days' stay, after which she will return to Iowa City for further
treatmens on her arm.
Miss Thelma Ziegelmaier, who is in nurse training at St. Barnabas
hospital, Minneapolis, who was called home by the illness and
death of her brother Frederick, expects to return this week to
resume her duties.
A baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Eric M. Latham of Pleasant
township on Jan. 26.
Lars Johnson, well known resident of the third ward, celebrated
his 92nd birthday anniversary Thursday, Jan. 28. Mr. Johnson is
enjoyig excellent health and keeps himself in good trim by
splitting wood at his home whenever the occasion requires.
Ossian
Mrs. Elmer Schissel and baby son were given a surprise
party at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. J. Holtey.
Wayne Draves went to Waterloo Tuesday on business.
Clarence Witt of LaCrosse was here Thursday to visit his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. John Witt and family. Walter Witt acompanied him
home.
H.C. Schneberger and G.E. Rossman went to Guttenberg and Dubuque
Friday on business.
Mrs. F.A. Figge and son Greg and Marie Lansing went to Dubuque
Saturday, where on Sunday Greg attended the K.C. initiation and
the ladies visited Dr. and Mrs. L.T Fillenworth and family.
Mrs. Hugo Huber came Thursday to visit her parents Mr. and Mrs.
Joe Becker and her brother C.L. Becker and family. She returned
Saturday to her home in Charles City.
Mrs. Carl Pier and her sister Estelle Collins of Dubuque spent
several days last week with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. John
Collins and family.
Mrs. Wm. F. Helwig and son Francis and Mrs. Anna Wirsching spent
Thursday in Postville with Mrs. Anna Burns.
Frances Wagner is home from a several weeks' visit in LaCrosse at
the home of her sister Mrs. Joe Dockendorf and family.
Will Collins and sisters, Mrs. M.J. Dolan and Mrs. Kate Canavan
attended the funeral of their cousin Mrs. Mike Carney in New
Hampton last Tuesday.
Dr. J.P. Schneberger, Dr. E.J. Ogesen and Dr. M.J. Miller
attended a dental meeting at Calmar Thursday evening.
John Larson had the misfortune to slip on the ice Saturday and
break his leg. He is staying with his brother Kent.
V.A. Pattison and wife went to Fayette Friday to attend the
funeral of the grandfather Mr. Earle.
Fort Atkinson
Mrs. Anton Kuhn came home last week from Elma, where she
was making the acquaintance of her new granddaughter, born to Mr.
and Mrs. Will Shimek recently. Mrs. Shimek will be remembered as
Miss Frances Kuhn, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anton Kuhn of this
place.
Miss Clara Paupe left for Ossian Monday where she will be
employed at the Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Schissel home for some time.
Mrs. Christina Behrens received the news that a baby son, Jerry
George, was born to Mr. and Mrs. George Behrens at Hamilton,
Iowa. George is a son of Mrs. Behrens.
Miss Clara Kuhn R.N., came home last week from Protivin, where
she was on professional duty.
Mrs. Peffer and daughter arrived last Friday from Minneapolis to
visit with her sick mother, Mrs. Geo. Cooney. Mrs. Peffer was
formerly Miss Edna Hurley of this place.
Mrs. Chas. Andera and son Vincent of Spillville spent the
forepart of the week in Fort Atkinson with her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. J.J. Kubish.
A.F. Mikesh spent Sunday in Spillville with his sister and
husband, Mr. and Mrs. F.C Swella, and son Gene.
Mrs. Frank Kuhn returned to her home in Calmar after a few days'
visit with her aged mother Mrs. Mary Pouska and brother Frank
Pouska.
Monkey Ridge
Earl and Lydia Weber went Tuesday to New Albin, where
they spent the past week visiting relatives.
Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Sharp and children moved on the Charley Lennon
farm last Wednesday.
Edwin and Willard Weber helped Fred Teskey haul hay for Mr.
Hustvedt.
Leslie Risear left Saturday for New Albin. He spent the past week
visiting with his cousin Harold Voegding.
Ridgeway
Miss Norma Jones of Lime Springs is visiting at the home
of her sister Mrs. Adolph Sanderson.
Mr. John Macal of Austin, Minn., arrived Tuesday of last week to
visit at the home of his son Will Macal.
Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Milbrath and son Alton moved to Rose Creek,
Minn., Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Albers of Cresco will move on
the farm vacated by them.
A number of friends gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Albert
Thompson Thursday evening to help celebrate Geneva Thompson's
birthday. The evening was spent socially.
Morgan Center
Mr. and Mrs. Brayton Brown and son Lyal, Mr. and Mrs.
Joe Jarosh and daughter Virginia Lee and Edna Curtis, were
Saturday evening visitors at the Malcolm Culbert home.
Will Stopperan sawed wood on Tuesday.
Shirley and Gloria Schmidt spent Wednesday at the home of their
grandmother Mrs. Fred Headington.
Bluffton
James Weldon has two new milch cows.
Dorothy Murdock, who was home on a visit, went back to her work
on the Canoe, the forepart of the week.
James Murdock, our merchant, made a business trip to Decorah on
Friday. Raymond Carolan accompanied him.
Mrs. Vern Porter visited her sister Mrs. Mollie O'Brien one day
this week.
Burr Oak
Mr. and Mrs. Lewie Underbakke visited a the Bernard Nash
home on Monday.
Mike Donlan, who has been ill for a long time, is still very
poorly and confined to his bed most of the time.
The following Burr Oak girls are again on the honor roll at
Decorah high school: Minnie Nelson, Ruth Krumm and Stella
Newhouse.
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Dinger, Saturday, Jan. 30, a son.
Congratulations.
Spillville
Anton Balik was a professional caller at Protivin Sunday
and Monday.
Mrs. Gow and daughter Winnefred of Chicago are guests of her
mother, Mrs. Lusk.
Mrs. Fred Marek went to Chicago, being called there on account of
the illness of her mother Mrs. Prochaska.
Mrs. Kate Cinzar is ill at this writing.
Mrs. Jos. Slebiska, who was very ill, is recovering and is able
to be up a part of the day.
John Silhachek, who was ill last week, is much better.
Friends of Mrs. Martin Kalishek of Protivin are sorry to hear of
her death, which occurred last Friday. Mrs. Kalishek is the
mother of Mrs. Jos. Klimesh of Conover.
Highlandville
Mr. and Mrs. Erik Arneson returned home last Friday from
Spring Grove, Minn., where the former was a patient at the
hospital.
Mrs. Victor Nordheim was a visitor at the home of her parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Arne Brunsvold, last week. She returned to her home
near Sattre Sunday.
South Springfield
Mr. and Mrs. Ole Haugen, Mr. and Mrs. Julius Clausen,
Mr. and Mrs. Pete Haugen and baby, Mrs. N.J. Haugen and Lettie,
Mrs. C.H. Knutson, Helen and Olga, Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Knutson,
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Arness and family and Mr. and Mrs. Valder
Meyer and children visited Wednesday evening at the E.H.
Wangsness home.
Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Lien visited Sunday at the I. Bornes home.
Miss Olga Knutson is spending this week at Decorah.
Mr. and Mrs. N.E Severson and children visited last Sunday at the
T.I. Tollefson home.
Protivin - Death of Mrs. Martin Kalishek
Mrs. Martin Kalishek, aged 70, died at her home in
Protivin, Jan. 29, 1932, after one week's illness.
She is survived by her husband and sons, Joseph, Charles,
William, John, Frank, Lewis, Richard; daughters, Mrs. V.J.
Shores, Mrs. Joseph Klimesh, Mrs. Lewis Badet, all living in this
community; two sons Leonard aged 19, Edward, age 2 and two
daughters Caroline and Emma in infancy preceded her in death.
She is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Josephine Kalishek; two
brothers, Mike and Joseph Novotny of Nebraska. Mrs. Lewis Novak,
a sisted [sic], deceased, half sister, Mrs. Kate Kovarik of near
Spillville, half brother Wenzel Noyotny, Protivin, half brother
John Novotny, North Dakota (deceased), grandchildren Richard
Kalishek, Reuben Kalishek, Clarence Kalishek, Mrs. Julius
Sattler, Donald Kalishek, Marjorie Kalishek, Laverne Bader,
Robert Bader, mary Ann Kalishek, Ben Kalishek, Angela Klimesh,
Walter Klimesh, Leonard Ira, Marcella Kalishek, Stanley Klimesh,
Bernadetta Kalishek, Ursulla Kalishek, Dolores Klimesh, Leonard
Klimesh, Clarence Ira, Prescott, Arizona; Lillian Ira, Tucson,
Ariz.; Edward and Joseph Ira, N.D.; great grandchildren: Verdene
Kalishek, Jaunita Kalishek, Grace Kalishek, Alvin Sattler and a
large number of other relatives.
The funeral which was largely attended, was held Monday Feb. 1,
1932, at the Holy Trinity church and interment was in the Holy
Trinity cemetery. Pallbearers were grandchildren: Richard
Kalishek, Reuben Kalishek, Ben Kalishek, Clarence Kaishek;
nephews: Adolph Kalishek and Edward Kalishek.
Death of Mrs. Mary Burns - Jackson Junction
Mrs. Mary Burns of Jackson Junction passed away January
27th, in the University hospital in Iowa City following an
operation, whch she had January 20th. She had been in ill health
for the past six months.
Funeral services were held in St. Mary's church, Waucoma,
Saturday morning at nine o'clock. Rev. J. Sheehy read the requiem
mass and also said the prayers at the grave. Burial was made in
St. Rose cemetery bythe side of her husband Thomas Burns, who
precededher in death many years ago.
The deceased is survived by three sons and two daughters, T.H.
Burns, Postville; Morgan, Jamestown, N.D.; Clem, at home; Sister
Mary Elaine, Chicago, Ill. and Elizabeth, Mrs. A.F. Lawrence,
Cresco. Another daughter, Alice, Mrs. E.E. Malloy preceded her in
death a few years ago. She is also survived by four sisters, Mrs.
W.J. Sullivan, Dubuque; Mrs. J.E. McEnaney, Austin, Minn.; Mrs.
James Hughes, Superior, Wis. and Mrs. Grant Williams, Fargo,
N.D., and by ten grandchildren.
Those from a distance who attended the funeral are Mr. and Mrs.
T.H. Burns and son of Postville; Mr. and Mrs. AF. Lawrence and
family, Cresco; Sister Mary Elaine and sister Mary Celerina of
Chicago; Morgan Burns, Jamestown, N.D.; Mrs. W.J. Sullivan,
Dubuque; Mrs. J.E. McEnaney, Austin, Minn.; Dr. J.P. Malloy and
sister Eileen of Castalia.
Pallbearers were J.H. Meyer, G.R. Taylor, George Lensing, Albert
Tomasek, Mike Dunn and Chas. Lynch.
Elgin Lady Passed Away at Hospital Here Thursday
Mrs. Sam Mosby of Elgin, passed away at the Decorah
hospital last Thursday morning at 3:00 o'clock where she had been
a patient since the previous Tuesday evening. Mrs. Mosby was the
wife of Sam Mosby, acting vice president of the bank at Elgin and
was prominent in social work in that town for many years. She is
survived by her hsband, one son and four daughters. The funeral
services were held in Elgin Sunday afternoon.
Pioneer Madison Woman Passed Away Friday
Gunhild O. Santon, an esteemed resident of Madison
township, passed away Friday, Jan. 29, at her home near the
Madison church. The deceased was a daughter of Ole and Ingeborg
Nelsdautter Santon and was born in Norway, May 18, 1848 and when
death claimed her, was 83 years, 8 months and 11 days old.
She came to America with her brother in 1856, and had been a
continuous resident of Winneshiek county, in Madison township
since then. She lived a good life and was always esteemed and
respected by all her many friends. She was always ready to assist
in any charitable and needed cause and was a contributor of money
to many worthy causes. Her death brings sorrow to many friends.
The funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon at 1:00
o'clock from the home and 1:30 from the Madison church. Rev. D.C.
Jordahl officiated and interment was in the Madison cemetery.
Lawrence Larson Funeral Was Largely Attended
The funeral services of Lawrence A. Larson which was
held Thursday afternoon from the F.N.E.L. church, was attended by
a very large concourse of friends, the large edifice being filled
to capacity. It was a military funeral, members of Anton Bernatz
Post American Legion of which the deceased was a member,
attending in a body.
The following veterans acted as pallbearers: C.R. Seiland, N.A.
Nelson, Victor Hoeg, Carl Danielson, Lars Seim and W.S Hustvedt.
Rev. T.A. Hoff preached a beautiful sermon. The Rev. Hoff is also
chaplain of Anton Bernatz Post and officiated at the grave. Taps
were sounded and the firing squad fied three volleys as their
departed comrade was lowered to his last resting place.
E.J. Vasgaard Died at Sioux Falls Jan. 18
Endre J. Vasgaard passed away at his home in Sioux
Falls, S.D., January 18, 1932, at 8:50 p.m. He had been a
resident there for more than 17 years and a resident of South
Dakota for 53 years. His death followed a paralytic stroke on
January 7.
The deceased was born in Norway February 1, 1858, coming to the
United States when he was 21 years old. He settled on a homestead
near Lennox, S.D., in 1881. He was united in marriage there
October 18, 1889, to Anna Egge of Decorah, Ia. In the spring of
1891 they moved near Centerville, S.D. where they lived
continuously until 1915 when they moved to Sioux Falls where Mrs.
Vasgaard passed away on June 28, 1929.
The funeral services wehre held at 12:30 o'clock, January 21, at
the Miller Funeral Home Chapel and at 2:00 o'clock at the West
Prairie church south of Lennox. Rev. H.M. Solem, his pastor for
more than 36 years, officiated. Burial was made at West Prairie
cemetery where Mrs. Vasgaard also rests.
The surviving children are a son John of Centerville and four
daughters, Helen (Mrs. Thomas Haugen) Decorah, Ia.; Magdalene
(Mrs. Leo Sophy) Centerville; Myrtle (Mrs. Fred Jory) Sioux Falls
and Emelia (Mrs. Lauritzer) Sioux Falls, with whom he had made
his home the past year. Nine grandchildren survive, also three
brothers and one sister, who live in Norway.
The pallberaers were Thomas Haugen, Decorah; Leo Sophy,
Centerville; Fred Jory, Sioux Falls, all sons-in-law and Paul,
Henry and Willie Ode, nephews, of Brandon.
Lincoln Township Pioneer Passed Away Sunday Night
Knute Erickson, Lincoln township pioneer who reached his
90th birthday on July 23, passed away at the home of his daughter
and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Espeseth, in Lincoln township
Sunday evening, Jan. 31.
He was born in Norway in 1841. His beloved wife passed away some
years ago and he had made his home with his daughter since. He
was a man who always enjoyed good health, being seldom ill. He
was industrious and kept at his work ergularly. Last summer he
assisted in the harvest fields. He was a man of high integrity
and worth and during his long life here was one of our highly
respected and well liked citizens.
When he came to this country, he located first in Nebraska where
he lived a few years, the balance of his lfe being spent in
Winneshiek county. The bereaved daughter has the sympathy of many
friends in her loss.
The funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon at 3:00
o'clock from the home. Rev. Williams of the Four Square Gospel of
Decorah officated.
Beloved Young Daughter Called to Her Reward
The many friends of Mr. and Mrs. Walter W. Jewell of
this city were grieved to hear of the death of their beloved
young daughter, Phyllis Byrd, nine years old, who passed away
Sunday afternoon, Jan. 31, at five o'clock after a ten days'
illness from spinal meningitis and other complications.
Everything that medical aid and loving hands could do was done
for the beloved child, but all to no avail.
She was an unusually bright and lovable little girl, her death
being the first break in the happy family circle which casts a
gloom of sorrow over the bereaved parents, sisters, Catherine,
Betty, Jane, and brother Walter; as well as the grandparents, Mr.
and Mrs. B.E. Bucknell and Mr. and Mrs. Ben Jewell, and they all
have the heartfelt sympathy of everyone in the community in their
bereavement.
The funeral services were held at ten o'clock Tuesday mornig from
the home. Dr. J.P. Burling of the Congregational Church
officiated and interment was in Phelps cemetery.
One Marriage Application
Cupid has not been very busy in Winneshiek county since
the start of the new year, as only one marriage applicaton has
been issued at the clerk of court's office. The application was
for Willie Wedow and Aldyce Anderson, both of Winneshiek county,
on Jan. 30.
July Marriage Just Recently Announced
The marriage of Dr. H.I. Nesheim and Miss Thora Grace
Heisler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Heisler, who live on
Highway 59 southwest of Waterloo, took place in Chicago on July
25, 1931, and was just recently announced by the bride's parents.
Dr. Nesheim is a son of Lars Nesheim of Decorah and had been
located in Waterloo for some time, recently moving to Joice,
Iowa, near Charles City. The many Decorah friends of the doctor
extend sincere congratulations.
