Automobile Notes - Doings of the Horseless Carriages,
Owners and Dealers
Beginning today we expect to print each week a column of
automobile notes. There are so many owners and prospective owners
of automobiles in Decorah and vicinity now, that we believe
"news" of this kind will prove interesting. Today the
column is not too long, but by next week we expect to have a much
larger number. Anyone having any auto news is requested to
telephone us.
-Erick Ness has bought an "E.M.F." 30.
-J.C. Harvey of Castalia was here on business yesterday.
-Supervisor K.W. Knutson bought a "Jackson" Saturday.
-Walter Bucknell took Chas. Moliart to Highlandville today.
-Fred McKay drove up from Waukoma in his "Reo"
Thursday.
-Mr. Werhan of Waukon autoed to Decorah on business Thursday.
-Sever Olson went to Mason City Saturday, returning last evening.
-Nick Olson of Kendallville bought S.M. Cox's
"Oldsmobiel" Friday.
-F.C. Herman drove his "White Steamer" over from Waukon
Sunday.
-Harold McKinney made a trip to Mabel Thursday and to Ossian
yesterday.
-Ed Rossley took a party of friends to Lime Springs and Cresco
Sunday.
-Sheriff T.J. Qualley took a party of friends to Rushford, Minn.,
Sunday.
-Harold McKinney sold a Buick Model F. to supervisor O.M. Selnes
Saturday.
-Herman Yager of Calmar broke the rear axle of his big touring
car yesterda.
-Will Kennedy drove up to Granger and other southern Minnesota
points yesterday.
-Mr. Will Noecker took a number of young people out to the Geo.
Beers bowery dance Saturday night.
-Louis Bender took Mr. Dresselhaus of Kansas City, who is
visiting Wm. Dresselhaus, to Cresco Saturday.
-Will Noecker, Harold McKinney, and Byron Graham took the United
Lutheran church choir to the Melaas funeral west of Bluffton
Sunday.
Albert Sampson went to the home of Eddie Sampson near Sattre
Sunday and took his sister, Mrs. John Anderson, to Calmar. She
returned to her home in Chicago.
-A.F. Porter took Marion Jacobs as far as Calmar on his return to
Hawkeye today. He returned with John M. Geddes of Williamsport,
Pa., with him. He expects to go to South America.
Napoleon Peard
The body of Napoleon Peard was brought to Decorah on
July 8th, from Enid, Oklahoma, he having passed away in that city
on July 6th from Brights disease. The funeral was held at the
home of his brother-in-law, James Donald of Canton, Minn., with
interment in Burr Oak cemetery. Before going to Oklahoma, Mr.
Peard was for several years a residnet of Decorah having been
associated with Mr. Reeves in buying stock. He leaves one son,
Roger W. Peard.

-Mrs. Erick Anderson went to Clear Lake Thursday.
-E.J. Curtin went to Beach, N.D., Saturday on bank business.
-Miss Mary Hanley went to Lansing yesterday to visit her aunt.
-Norman Bradish left Wednesday for Birchwood, N.D. for a fishing
trip.
-A. Leytze is enjoying a visit from his brother, E. Leytze of
Chicago.
-Mr. and Mrs. Ole T. Thompson went to Cresco yesterday on
business.
-Misses Margaret and Myra Moran went to Milwaukee Saturday for a
visit.
-Misses Irene Moody and Ruth Payne went to Hawkeye Thursday to
visit relatives.
-Mrs. Richard Schrubbe went to Janesville, Wis., Friday to visit
relatives.
-Miss Signy Larsen went to Cresco Saturday to visit her brother,
Rev. Lauritz Larson.
-Dr. and Mrs. F.W. Conover went to Lake Kegonsa, Wis., Wednesday
for an outing.
-Frank Peters went to Cedar Rapids Saturday for a several days'
visit with his family.
-Born to Mr. and Mrs. Paul Hausen Tuesday morning, July 11th, a
ten pound baby girl.
-Miss Florence Foley came up from Dubuque Wednesday to visit her
sister, Mrs. L.R. Schrempf.
-Mrs. N. Arveson returned to St. Olaf, Iowa, Thursday, after
visiting at the home of Mrs. S. Anfinson.
-Rev. Daniel Borge left Saturday for Lee, Ill., where he will be
assistant to a Synod Lutheran pastor.
-Dean Wellington McVettle went to Cresco yesterday to inspect the
Episcopal church building there.
-Miss Erminie Duffy of Sioux Falls, S.D., has been visiting her
grandmother, Mrs. E.A. Duffy.
-Frank Duffy, who has been with his father on his claim near
Morristown, S.D., arrived here last Tuesday to visit his
grandmother, Mrs. E.A. Duffy.
-Miss Ruth Stiles returned to New York City Saturday after
visiting her sisters, Miss Lizzie Stiles and Mrs. Spurr.
-Mrs. E.R. Haines came down from Sherwood, N.D., last Tuesday to
visit her sisters, Miss Lizzie Stiles and Mrs. Spurr. Mr. Haines
came Friday.
-Willis and Ness, propietors of the New Furniture Store, are in
Des Moines attending the embalmers' school.
-Miss Agnes Ingvoidstad and Miss Rachel Odson went to Prairie du
Chien yesterday to take treatment for rheumatism.
-Dr. and Mrs. C.L. Topliff and son, Lyle, spent Sunday in
Postville at the home of Mr. Topliff's brother, Dr. Ray Topliff.
-Mr. and Mrs. L.A. Marsh and daughter, Marjorie, spent several
days the past week at McGregor Heights.
-W.H. Barthell of New Hampton was here from Thursday till
Saturday to visit his mother and to attend to business.
-Rev. Father Gallagher returned to East Dubuque, Ill., Saturday
after visiting at the home of his father, Patrick Gallagher, in
this city.
-Mr. and Mrs. O.C. Attletweed returned to Beach, N.D., Wednesday
after several weeks' visit here and with Mr. Attletweed's mother
in Military twp.
-Mr. and Mrs. Behuler of Dubuque, who were married Wednesday,
returned to their home yesterday after visiting Mrs. Behuler's
brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Mollart.
-Born to Mr. and Mrs. John Betts Saturday, July 15, 1911, a baby
girl.
-H.G. Ward and H.L. Johnson of Burr Oak were Decorah visitors
Saturday.
-Cashier F.E. Cratsenberg of Burr Oak made a business trip to
Decoah Thursday.
-Mrs. H.T. Little reutned on Friday to Cottonwood, S.D., after
attending the funeral of her brother, Napoleon Peard.
Neighborhood News - Happenings of Interest Gathered for
the Benefit of Our Readers
Freeport
-D.H. Beach is enjoying a visit with his sisters, mrs.
Walter Green and Mrs. A. Davenport of Sioux Falls this week.
-Carl Volding is carrying mail on rural route No. 6 while our
regular carrier, Harold Dinger, is taking a vacation.
-Miss Hazel Sheetz concluded a three weeks' visit with her
parents, F.M. Sheetz and wife and returned to Austin, Minn.,
Monday last.
-John Flueck of Pleasant township passed through this burg
Saturday on his way to Decorah.
Locust
-Mrs. John Harter attended the funeral of Mrs. George
Shoo in Canoe twp. on Thursday.
-Frank Richards, who is drilling a well for Mike Barth has
reached a depth of 240 feet. At present they are in solid rock
and expect to strike water in a few days.
-Will Iverson who has been working for Ed Matter returned to his
home near Springwater the first of the week.
Lincoln
-Tom Seim had a runaway with a mower one day last week
which will lay him up for several days at least.
-A.F. Schild autoed to Decorah last week Thursday with his nieces
Misses Rose and Georgia Rudig and Myrtle Schild. They visited the
ice cave and Dunning Springs.
-Winnifield Kratz has been assisting his cousins, Wesley and
Walter Kratz in getting their grain cut the past few days.
Calmar
-Hans Evenson is attending a postmasters' convention at
Postville.
-Dr. Conover left Thursday for Yellowstone Park. He expects to be
gone about a month.
-Mrs. T.J. Ahern will entertain the M.E. Ladies Aid next Thursday
afternoon.
-Mrs. I.N. Stromsodt is enjoying a visit from her sister, Mrs.
Preeper of St. Paul.
-Mr. and Mrs. Ward Leffingwell took the latter's Sunday school
class for a picnic Thursday at Spillville.
-Elmer Sandager came Wednesday from Lisbon, N.D., for a visit
with his mother.
Sattre
-Anfin Anfinson made a flying trip to Decorah Friday
afternoon on business.
-Miss Bertha Grindeland is doing kitchen work at the Ed. Sampson
home at this writing.
-Miss Beatrice Nordheim spent Saturday evening and Sunday with
her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Hover, near Locust.
-Mrs. Theodore Anfinson from N. Dakota arrived here Saturday
evening to visit her mother, Mrs. Horvey, north of Sattre, and
other relatives and friends here-abouts.
-Julius Hanson, about 3 miles to the south of Sattre, had the
misfortune of breaking his arm and bruising his side quite badly
last Saturday while unloading hay in the barn. He was taken to
Highlandville to Doctor Hexom where he had his wounds dressed. He
remained until Sunday and is getting along nicely at this
writing.
Wednesday, July the 12th occurred the marriage of Mr. J.E.
Sampson of Pleasant township to Miss Tilda Grindeland. The
wedding ceremony was performed by Rev. Seehus at the home of the
bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Stone Grindeland in Highland
township. Only the most immediate relatives were present. Both
the bride and groom are young people of genuine merit and their
union is a matter for congratulations from their numerous
friends. May the future bring them few sorrows and much
happiness.
Ft. Atkinson
-Albert Kuderna was down from Conover Saturday. Albert
looks happy as he has a baby girl.
-Will Rausch autoed to Jerico Thursday.
-Little Erma Hinker is on the sick list.
Burr Oak
-Miss Lottie Olson is clerking for Mr. Helmer.
-Nelson Sheley is home from Spear Fish, S.D.
-Messrs. Whitney and Lincoln and Mesdames Whitney and Shannon,
and Miss Lincoln, were up from Decorah Monday for the funeral of
N. Peard.
-Ben Ward is drilling wells this week.
-Mrs. Little came from Cottonwood, S.D., to attend the funeral of
her brother, Mr. Peard, and is visiting with her daughter, Mrs.
Nash.
-Jack Ackerson and wife go to Canada next week for a visit with
relatives.
-While Tom Knox was working on his mother's place west of here
Monday, his horses got loose from the hay loader and he was
thrown to the ground, sustaining serious injuries. His nose was
broken, his lip gashed and his arms sprained. Dr. Goudy of
Harmony is attending him.
Jackson Junction
-Married at Waucoma, July 12, Mr. Ambie Owens and Mrs.
Frances Fisher, Rev. Father Hogan officiating.
Ravena
-George Cremer assisted J. Holder in making hay the past
week.
-Julius Brown and A. Peck delivered hogs to Ole Ellingson in
Decorah Monday.
Clay Hill
-A.L. Tyler had a gas system placed in his buildings.
The lights (the gas is also used for cooking) are very good and
give first class light.
-We are glad to report that Miss Ruth Dinger is recovering nicely
after an attack of appendicitis and peritonites.
-Quite a few from Clay Hill attended the funeral of Mrs. Shoo on
Monkey Ridge Thursday last.
