~Word was received here last week of the death of Mrs. Alex Davis
at her home in Hooker, Okla. Her husband, Alex Davis, is a
brother of Mrs. M. N. Henkle, Mrs. Frank Harward and Miss Emma
Davis, all who live here. Mrs. Davis was a daughter of Peter and
Rachel Noel, early pioneers in the community west of here in
Davis county, where Mrs. Davis was born and reared. The Davis
family have lived in Oklahoma about thirty-six years. Last fall
Mr. and Mrs. Davis observed their fiftieth wedding anniversary.
~It has been announced that Dr. W. J. Todd, district
superintendent of Ottumwa, will be on the Douds charge next
Sunday. He will preach at 11 oclock at the Mt. Moriah rural
church three miles east of here. In the afternoon he will conduct
quarterly meeting in the Douds church where in the evening he
will also hold services. In all the services he will be assisted
by the pastor, Rev. P. O. Cline.
~Miss Mary Keegan, coach of the girls basketball team
entertained the girls at a bunk party following the game at Eldon
Friday night. The girls were Melva Dooley, Freda Nicklin, Lorene
Dooley, Louise Fridley, Nedra Copeland, Frances Hayden, Elizabeth
Nicholson and Louise Gardner. Bernice Lasley was unable to attend
because of illness.
~Miss Gladys Mills and Miss Lillian Froyd, high school teachers,
were away over the weekend, the former visited her sister near
Des Moines and the latter with friends in Fairfield.
~Louise Vandergriff, a sixth grade pupil, was placed sixth in the
county spelling contest held in Keosatsqua Saturday. She was
accompanied by her teacher, Mrs. B. R. Hollis. Mr. Hollis,
superintendent of the school, and W. E. Michael president of the
school board.
~Miss Bernice Lasley was in Ottumwa the first of the week for
treatment for an abscess in her ear. She is a junior in the high
school.
~B. R. Hollis, superintendent of the local school, made an
address before a gathering in Douds Sunday night.
~Miss Opal Nelson, who teaches home economics in the Douds
school, visited the weekend with her parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Charley Nelson.

NEWTON HOWELL.
Newton Howell, 56 years old, died at the home of his brother, Roy Howell, 2018 East Main street, at 11:30 this morning. The body has been removed to the Drake & Miller funeral chapel, pending the completion of funeral arrangements.
BASTIAN SERVICES.
Funeral services for Mrs. W. J. Bastian, who died Sunday noon at her home in Oak Park, Ill., will be held from the home of her sister, Mrs. A. Odenwalder, 1017 North Court street, Wednesday morning at 11 o’clock. The Rev. H. Sears Thomson, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, will have charge of the services. Interment will be made in Ottumwa cemetery. Pallbearers will be Allen Sharp, John Sharp, Frank Fiedler, George McElroy, Walter McElroy, Russell Harper, Arthur Lowenberg and Rowe Hinsey.
VOGEL INFANT.
Ernest Frederick Vogel, Jr., died about 8 o’clock Monday night at the home in Central addition. He is survived by his parents. Private Funeral services were held.
