A Narrow Escape.
Miss Myrtle Cremer, daughter of Sheriff J.H. Cremer in attempting
to step over the wire cable connecting the merry-go-round with
the motive power, had a narrow escape from serious injury by
having her skirts caught in the jack which holds the cable in
place. Miss Cremer in company with Charles Robinson, was passing
on the west side of the big wheel and between it and the engine.
The jack is raised somewhat by being placed upon a box about a
foot high. Miss Cremer had stepped upon the box and seeing
several men step over decided that she could do likewise. In
stepping over she did not lift her skirt high enough to clear the
cable and it was caught and drawn into the jack. She was thrown
down and dragged to the outer edge of the big wheel and for
several feet around the circle. That Miss Cremer was not
seriously injured is due to the fact that the engineer saw the
mishap and instantly stopped the engine and that Mr. Robinson,
who was acting as her escort, caught her as she fell and held her
from the ground as much as possible. Beyond a few bruises and the
loss of a dress skirt which was totally ruined, Miss Cremer is
none the worse for the experience. She returned home, changed her
attire and was on the grounds again within half an hour enjoying
herself as much as anybody.
