H.A. Zangs dies: Pioneer in Ottumwa

Henry Albert Zangs, a prominent citizen of Ottumwa for the past fifty-six years,died last evening at 6:20 o'clock at his home 124 West Fifth Street after a few weeksillness due to the infirmities of old age.
The funeral services will be tomorrow morning at St. Mary's church at 9 o'clockwith his pastor, The Very Rev. F.W. Hoppman, officiating at the requiem mass assistedby Rev. Father James Foley, pastor of the Sacred Heart Church. Internment in Calvarycemetery.

Born June 4, 1832, Mr. Zangs birthplace was M. Neuark, Germany, but when a youngboy, he with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Zangs, moved to M. Gladbach, Germany. He served three years in the Prussian army under Frederich Wilhelm, and came toAmerica in 1865 locating shortly afterwards in Ottumwa where he was continuouslyin business for almost fifty years.

For many years he was active in Ottumwa's business circles, and had a prominentpart in the progress of the community.

Four years ago, Nov. 5, 1916, Mr. and Mrs. Zangs celebrated their golden weddingday, and only the past Christmas their home was the scene of a family reunion, allof their five children present.

Besides the widow, Mrs. Pauline Auwerda Zangs, and one brother, Mathias Zangs ofM. Gladbach, Germany, three daughters and two sons survive. Mrs. Robert E. Farrellof Chicago, Christian Zangs, Miss Reena Zangs, Mrs. C.B. Searle of Ottumwa and LeoJ. Zangs of Clinton. Also five grandchildren, Pauline, Daniel Albert and Mary CatherineFarrell of Chicago; Leo J. Zangs Jr., of Clinton and Geo. B Searle of Ottumwa, survive.
