WERE DESTITUTE.
Pitiful Case of Destitution Was Found on West Main Street.
Almost naked and half starving the five little children of Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester Hough, residing on West Main street, were given in charge of the Iowa Children’s Home Finding Society Tuesday by Justice Campbell, it being proven that they had been grossly neglected by their parents.
Information charging Mr. and Mrs. Hough being unfit persons to have charge of the children was filed before Justice Campbell yesterday afternoon by Chief of Police John Gray. Constable Ed. Campbell went to the house and after spending over an hour in finding clothes enough to make the children at all presentable, brought Mrs. Hough and the children before the Justice. Mr. Hough refusing to accompany the officer.
Smilingly and without a blush of shame the mother listened to the testimony of her neighbors as they told of the conditions existing in the home. The officers say that it is the most pitiful case of destitution that has come within their knowledge for several years. It was stated that Mr. Hough did not and would not try to provide for the children and that Mrs. Hough were unfit persons to have charge of the children and ordered them turned over to the care of Miss Eva Shaw, local agent for the Iowa Children’s Home Finding Society, who left with them on the Rock Island last evening for DesMoines. The children range from three to twelve years of age, four boys and one girl, and after a short stay in DesMoines good homes will be provided for them. At the request of Mrs. Hough, Constable Campbell had a photograph taken of the five children.
