DAILY EXCEPT SUNDAY.

THE CITY.
--Fritz’s Manifesto 10c cigar.
--Daggetts for drays and carriages.
--Chocolate marshmallows and molasses chips 30 cents per pound. These are high grade candies.  CLAUDE MYERS.
--In the office of county superintendent the following are taking teachers examinations today:  Jess Brion, of Competine; Clarie Jones, of Ottumwa; and Cora Fraizer, of Eldon.

--There was an exciting time in the Smoky Row district near the Rock Island freight depot yesterday afternoon. The scene of war was a house occupied by Mrs. Chesser and for a while there was a hot time even for Smoky Row. The stove was kicked over, the windows all broken and the furniture flying in all directions.  The arrival of the police put a stop to the merry making just when it was at its best.
--Contractor J. J. Connell, of this city, who has been engaged for some months on a masonry contract for the Rock Island cut-off at Brighton, returned home today for an over-Sunday visit with his family.  He has a large contract with the St. Louis & San Francisco, for masonry work between Memphis and St. Louis for the coming summer, and goes to take charge of the work about February 1 at which time he closes his work on the Rock Island.  He made The Democrat office a pleasant call today and ordered some printed stationery.
