Dr. A. C. Jongewaard


Dr. A.C. Jongewaard passed away at his home here Sunday morning, January
2nd, 1938, at 9:30 a.m. He was 50 years old. His death came as a result of
pernicious anemia and complications. Funeral services were held Tuesday
afternoon at Central Ref. Church, Rev. Meengs officiating.

He was born December 11th, 1878, near Orange City where he grew to manhood,
graduating from Northwestern Academy and teaching school in the county four
years. He then took a medical course at Chicago, a six year course which he
completed in four years by attending night school at the University and
taking his medical training at Rush Medical where he received his degree. He
was student instructor in pathology while attending the medical college from
which he graduated in 1904. That year he took his bride to Sioux Center
where he set up a practice in which he has continued for thirty-four years.
All of these with the exception of seven years were spent in Sioux Center.
He moved his family to Montana for seven years for a change of climate and
at the end of that time he returned to Sioux Center where he continued to
practice medicine until two years ago when his healthy began to fail.

About a year ago he started having blood transfusions at intervals, until a
few weeks previous to his death.

During his residence here Dr. Jongewaard was twice elected County Coroner
and has been health officer for the town for some years.

Dr. and Mrs. Jongewaard remembered their thirty-fourth wedding anniversary
on New Year's Day, just one day before the doctor passed away.

He leaves to mourn his beloved wife, two sons, Richard Cornelius of Hudson,
S.D., and Albert John of San Diego, Calif., and five daughters; Mrs. G.W.
Baldwin of Hawarden, Mrs. James T. Robertson, of Santa Monica, Calif.;
Judith Mae, who teaches rural school, Betty June and Beverly Ann who are in
school here. One son, Richard C., died in infancy; one brother, J.C.
Jongewaard of Hurley, S.D.; three sisters, Mrs. J.H. Muilenberg of
Manchester, S.D., Mrs. H.B. Bogaard of Orange City, and Mrs. C.A. Walhoff of
Rock Valley, all of who came to attend the last rites. Two grandchildren
also survive, namely Almoi Nyls Jongewaard and James Tindall Robertson II,
son of Mr. and Mrs. James T. Robertson of Calif.

Mrs. Robertson (nee Melba Jongewaard) and Albert John Jongewaard were unable
to be here for the funeral. Albert who is in the U.S. Navy was obliged to
report on duty the day after New Years and the ship on which he has berth is
now on its way to Australia for a three month period. Melba has a year old
son with who a long journey at this season would be hazardous.

Other out-of-town relatives and friends who were present at the funeral were
Mr. and Mrs. George Muilenberg of Manchester, S.D., and Cornelius Muilenberg
of Alexandria, S.D., Mr. and Mrs. Tone Gradnis, Cornelius Grandis, and Mrs.
John Van Olst of Chandler, Minn., Cornelius and Stanley Jongewaard of
Hurley, S.D., Harvey Bogaard of Humbolt, Iowa, Mrs. H.G. Bogaard and Betty
of Orange City, Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Walhoff and Helen Ruth of Rock Valley, Mr.
and Mrs. Neal Vander Meer and Mrs. Marcus Muilenberg of Alton, Mr. and Mrs.
Neal Bogaard of Rock Valley, Mrs. Neal Van Citters of Sibley, Mrs. G. Van
Steenbergen and family of Hull, Hugo Synhorst and Mrs. and Mrs. John
Synhorst and Jennie of Orange City, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Tindall of LeMars,
Mrs. E. Exerhart and Mrs. Clarence Miller, of Hawarden, and Mr. and Mrs.
Gale Reinders of Orange City.

Six nephews were pallbearers while six physicians, Dr. Harry Vander Stoep
and Dr. Downing of LeMars, Dr. S.B. DePree and Drs. Wm. & Gt. Maris formed
an honorary group of pallbearers.

Miss Mae Irene Bonema, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Bonnema from Hawarden
and Dick Fedders, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hennan Fedders of Ireton, were married
at the home of the bride's parents last Wednesday. Rev. J.H. Van Dyke of
Ireton officiating using the single ring ceremony. The bride was
attractively attired in a dark blue transparent velvet gown with accessories
to match. The groom in an oxford gray suit. The ceremony was attended by
relatives. A reception was held for the young folks in the evening. Mr. and
Mrs. Fedders plan to care for the Albert Bonnema farm until March. 1st.
