LINDY FLEW OVER HAWARDEN
As predicted in last week’s Independent, Col. Chas. A. Lindbergh flew
directly over Hawarden about 1:30 Saturday afternoon in the Spirit of St.
Louis on his way from Sioux Falls to Sioux City. He approached from the
northwest and apparently set his course in the direction of the water tower
but evidently discovered that he would not pass over the business section of
the city and when he reached a point over the residence district on
Gladstone Hill suddenly veered his plane to the west so that he passed
almost directly over the flag pole on Kansas street and then winged his way
towards Sioux City. He was flying low and the markings on his plane (NX211)
were clearly visible. His flight over Hawarden furnished quite a thrill to
those who saw him.
Says Story Was Practically Correct

Dear Sir:
With regard to the letter in last week's Independent purporting it have been
written by Mr. and Mrs. L. Luikens of LeMars, discrediting the story about
the separation of the Luikens children, would like to say that while due to
an error on the part of the reporter at Norfolk, Neb.,the original story was
not correct in detail, it was none the less true in fact.
We four children were separated thirty-one years ago at the death of our
mother and all of us have not had the privilege of living together again at
any time after that. As the article states, Jacob left when a young man at
LeMars and all efforts to locate him for twelve years after that were
futile.
The salesman's visit took place in the fall of 1924 and subsequent
communications was made by me instead of Mrs. Pennings. Incidentally while
my brother was in LeMars for a very brief time fifteen years ago, we were
married and away and were not with him.
As Miss Lucilla was not one of the four left motherless, her visit to
Norfolk in the summer of 1925 has no bearing on the story. This was our
first opportunity to go to see him and we are planning to hold a more
complete reunion some time in the near future.
