ALTON COUPLE SURPRISE FRIENDS

Miss Esther Scholten and Arthur McCarthy of Alton were married Saturday, Jan. 23, 1926, according to announcements received by friends last Saturday. The young people were married at Elk Point, S.D., and the marriage was kept secret even from their parents. Mr. and Mrs. McCarthy are leaving Friday by car for Seattle, Wash., where they plan to make their home. They will spend Sunday at Dell Rapids, S.D., at the home of the bridegroom’s sister, Mrs. Julius Konz. They will be missed by a large circle of friends here, for they are popular young people, from well known Alton families. The bride is the younger daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Scholten. She is a bright and charming young lady, a graduate of the Alton high school and has taught school for several years south of Alton. The bridegroom is the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. J. M McCarthy. He was a member of Alton’s county championship basketball squad. If we remember correctly He has recently been employed at the Harrison and Dyke drug store where he has won many friends by his efficient service and cheerful, friendly manner. Alton friends extend heartiest congratulations and best wishes.
