Granville: Like a shock came the sad news Monday morning that Mr. Piper had
been killed in a wreck while returning with stock somewhere in Dakota. At
this date no particulars were attainable. The body passed through here on
its way to Paullina Monday night. Mr. Piper was a universal favorite among
his associates and it hardly seems possible that we will no longer see him.
He expected to meet his wife and baby here Monday morning but instead of
joy, what a sad meeting. We understand his wife is prostrated by the shock.
She has the sympathy of all in her bereavement.

Alton Democrat, Oct. 21, 1899

A young man known as "Kid" Piper, who drifted into Paullina with a ball team
about two years ago, was killed by the cars at Willmar, Minn., Sunday night.
He had been up in that region buying cattle for the Granville firm of Gannon
& Haase and was riding in a way car when it jumped the track, and he was
crushed in the debris. The body was brought to Granville Monday and placed
in charge of the young man's father, who came from Lyons, Neb. to take
charge of it, and passed through here Tuesday evening on his return journey,
Mr. Piper was a married man with one child and had been living in Granville.
It was reported that a number of others were killed in the wreck, but
reference to the Minneapolis papers of Monday failed to verify the rumor.

Granville Gleanings: Monday morning came a telegram announcing the death of
Kid Piper. The sad news was a severe shock to his many friends here. For the
last year he had been in the employment of the firm of Cannon & Hasse, and
two weeks ago he went to Dakota to buy some stock and on his way back, near
Grand Falls [i.e., Granite Falls], Minn. the caboose jumped the track on a
trestle bridge, killing him instantly. The body was sent to Paullina, his
former home, and the services were held there at 2 o'clock p.m. His remains
were taken to Nebraska for interment, where his parents reside. He leaves a
heart broken wife and one child to mourn his loss. His many friends here
extend their sympathy to the bereaved relatives.

Hosper Happenings: Kid Piper, recently of Granville, was killed in a
railroad wreck near Granite Falls, Minn., Sunday night. Mr. Piper, although
not coming to Hospers very often, made many friends who extend their
heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved relatives, wife and baby.
