KILLED by the CARS.
Akron Tribune:  A man named Arthur Uhl was killed above the James Ross crossing last night (Thursday sic-early Friday a.m.) by a freight train.  He had quarreled with the foreman of a fencing gang and jumped his job.  As he came down the road on foot it is evident that he went to sleep by the side of the track, stretching himself partially across the east rail.  He was run over by the train bound south and diaphragm crushed.  The corpse is lying at Johnson’s undertaking rooms and being given proper care until it can be learned where his relatives and friends are.
**Research Clarification: The correct spelling of the deceased's last name is EWELL (not Uhl.) The date of death was Friday, September 10, 1897.

SUICIDE NEAR SHELDON
Ann McFarland, Hanged Herself Friday Evening at the Home of a Brother.
RECENTLY CAME FROM ILLINOIS.
Discovered Before Life was Extinct, But Could Not be Saved—Said to be Slightly Demented.

Miss Ann McFarland, who has been visiting with her brother, Ed McFarland who lives two miles east of Sheldon, for the past month committed suicide last Friday evening while seemingly demented.  She went up stairs and deliberately tied one end of a small rope to the stair rail, making a slip-noose of the other end, which she placed around her neck, and then walked down stairs as far as the rope would allow, and strangled to death.  She was discovered and cut down before life was extinct, and medical aid summoned, but she died in a short time.  Deceased came from Adeline, Ill., about a month ago and has acted more or less queerly ever since she has been here but no one had any idea that she had in contemplation the taking of her life.  She was 57 years of age, owned a good farm and was in comfortable circumstances.  After being notified by the Coroner that it was not necessary for him to hold an inquest, the remains were taken to her old home in Illinois for interment.  Her brother, Ed McFarland is one of the most respected of citizens in the community where he resides, and has a host of friends who will sympathize with him in his hour of trouble.

GASOLINE GETS IN ITS WORK.
Mrs. Ed Partch of Rock Rapids Has Found Out That Gasoline Will Explode.

Rock Rapids Reporter:  Mrs. Ed Partch had an experience with gasoline Monday forenoon that resulted in an explosion, burning her face and arms quite badly.  Her physician thinks, however, that the burns are not sufficient extent to result seriously and she is doing as well as can be expected under the circumstances.  The accident was caused by putting gasoline in hot water while the stove was lighted, the heated water vaporized the gasoline which became ignited from the blaze below, and an explosion resulted.  Without doubt Mrs. Partch will remember that gasoline is explosive, for some time.
