DISAPPEARANCE OF A LE MARS GIRL

A sensation was created at LeMars Wednesday morning by the report that a
German girl, Miss Maggie Oldehoff, committed suicide Monday evening by
drowning herself in the pond at Gehlen’s mill, just north of the city.

Miss Oldehoff had been in this country but one year. She was 17 years old
and has a sister aged 20, who works as a domestic in this city, and another
sister who lives near Remsen.

She had been washing last week for Mrs. A. Sartori, but was dismissed Monday
morning. She then went to her sister, on Clark street, and gave her all of
her money, tied up in a handkerchief, saying she would need it no more, and
that her sister would not see her again. Miss Oldehoff had been very
homesick and wanted to go back to Germany, but had not money enough. She
started from her sisters place and went north toward the mill pond. Tuesday
her sister becoming uneasy, went to
Remsen, and finding that Maggie was not at her married sister’s, she came
back in the night.

The authorities are searching for the girl.
