LOCAL HAPPENINGS
Happy New Year to all.
Dr. Wyckoff spent Christmas at Sioux City.
The scarlet fever patients are out of danger.
Dr. Owens, from Alton, visited Mrs. Jim Reeves last Saturday.
John Lennan left Tuesday evening for Clayton county on a visit.
Frank Johnson, the operator, started for Harcourt on a short visit.
Theodore Shoemaker went to Franklin Grove, Ills., to eat turkey with his
parents.
Miss Beasley from Detroit, Michigan, sister to Mrs. Elgie, is here visiting
during the holidays.
Now is the time to swear off from all bad habits and turn over a new leaf
with the new year.
T.W. Elgie, grain buyer at Beresford, D.T., came home to spend Christmas
with his family.
Chas. Richards, grain buyer for Hopkins & Co. has closed out his business
here and gone back to LeMars.
The loose cows about our streets are a nuisance. They should be tied up.
Otherwise some of our indignant citizens will make them into beef on short
notice.
Gus Kuhl's little 18x24 store gets away with more groceries in one week than
any other large concern in Sioux County.
Mr. Maxwell made a flying visit to Sioux City on Friday. As it was his first
visit to the metropolis, he expressed much surprise in seeing so many
elegant buildings.
The turkey roast given by Mr. and Mrs. Elgie was one of those enjoyable
occasions on which the hostess does justice to herself, and the merry
Christmas party which assembled around the festal board groaning with good
things proved themselves equal to the occasion.
If you wish to buy an overcoat or a suit of clothes, it will pay you to go
and see Gus Kuhl, as he is right upon his ear in that line.
In order for Maurice to be classed with other cities, it is necessary to
have a skating rink, and we are not going to be left, for W.H. Reeves & Son
are going to move their implement shed down on Main street, put in a hard
floor and us it for a rink this winter. They intend to build an addition of
thirty-six feet for their machinery.
The Christmas tree was a success in every feature. The committee on
arrangements was kept busy all day long carrying and arranging the numerous
and handsome presents which were brought in during the day, and when night
came the tree was loaded to overflowing. After singing by the choir and
appropriate address was made by the superintendent, Henry Goortson. The
distribution of presents was the next thing in order and by the countenances
of the children Santa Claus made no mistake.
DIED.
BOWEN-At his residence three miles southwest of Maurice, Sioux county, Iowa,
Levi Bowen, aged 66 years, 7 months and 21 days.
The deceased was born in Lewis county, N.Y., May 5, 1819, where he spent the
days of his childhood and youth. The 14th of December 1841 [the year date is
blurred], he was united in marriage to Miss Jane Passenger, of the same
county, and in 1846 removed to Fond du Lac county, Wis., where he resided
until 1870, when he removed to Sioux County, Iowa, which was then in its
infancy, and settled with his family on the unbroken prairie where he spent
the remainder of his days until his work on earth was accomplished and his
Master's call was to come up higher. There ____ former homes he had endeared
himself to a large circle of friends by his uniform kindness and exemplary
deportment, where he will long be remembered as a true friend and worthy
citizen. He leaves a wife 61 years old and three sons, having buried three
daughters, one in infancy, the other two, Mrs. H. Morton and Lamenta, who
are buried on the same lot where his ashes now rest. We mourn for him as a
brother departed whom we expect to meet again in the morning of the
resurrection. As he died in the full assurance that his peace was made with
God, and (to use his own language) that his faith was in Jesus. That his
whole reliance was on Him even in his extreme sufferings (for he was a great
sufferer) his confidence in God was unshaken, which is a great solace to his
family and especially his bereaved widow, who truly feels that she is
passing through the dark waters of affliction, trusting in the same blessed
Saviour who has taken their loved one, and her earthly protector to come
home before her.

kind neighbors who have so thoughtfully and effectually assisted them in
their severe affliction and bereavement.
