Sioux County Herald, Orange City, (Sioux), Iowa, May 28, 1874

Frank Reeves, son of John Reeves, living in Seney, Plymouth County, was
kicked by a horse a short time since and died on last Thursday. Was about
21 years of age.

COUNTY SUPERINTENDENT’S NOTES.

School in Nassau township, Miss Hattie Van Horssen, teacher. On register 29;
present 15; order, good. Scholars, small and backward; none further advanced
than the 3rd Reader. This school will be again visited before the term
closes, and more extended notice given. The school room still lacks a
blackboard, which should be remedied at once.

School in Nassau township, Mr. M. Winter, teacher. On register 22; present
13. Order good. School backward, but a vast improvement over visits during
the winter term. Like all other school houses so far visited in Nassau
township, this lacks every convenience.

School in Floyd township, R. E. Wood, teacher. On register 11; present 10;
scholars small and backward. Mr. Wood’s ability as a teacher is a sufficient
guarantee as to order and efficiency.

School in Holland township, Miss Jane Borterman, teacher. On register 13;
present 11; order good; methods of instruction good. All legal branches
taught, except physiology. This is Miss Borterman’s first term, but she
seems to be doing very well. School house, neat and kept in good order.

I would remind directors that it is their duty to furnish brooms, registers,
chalk and other necessaries for school houses, and would for their state,
that I am not an agent for any firm dealing in school furniture, books,
charts, maps, etc.; nor do I intend to be during my term of office, but will
furnish addresses of various dealers, and any other information that may be
desired in reference to them by school officers.
~E. O. Plumbe, Co. Supt.
