Bucktown indulged in a sort of Baccanalian orgie
Sunday night, and for a short time there was undue excitement in that portion
of the city. Cal Simpson filled up on prohibition beverages and fell from
grace. He stormed about Meyer's saloon at the corner of Second and Iowa
streets, broke window panes and executed numerous other capers, when
Policement Hall arrived and locked up the obstreperous individual. Yesterday
morning the man who filed the complaint withdrew the information and Simpson
was released by paying costs. A short time after this scrimage occurred Elmer
hall was arrested for disturbing the peace in the same locality, and yesterday
morning paid a fine of $8.
Capt. Martens arrested "Bully Howard on the
charge of larceny. Howard was accused of entering Widigan's saloon on Second
street, between Rock Island and Iowa, while the proprietor was engaged in a
back room and of emptying a box of cigars in his pockets. The information
filed was withdrawn by the complainant, and Howard paid the costs of the
prosecution as far as it had progressed.
Officer Faulkner coralled Jim McMahon in the vicinity
of the Glucose works Sunday night about 10 o'clock, he having participated in
a row at Buergel's saloon, situated near the "forks", where the road
turns. He was charged with disturbing the peace and sentenced to seven days'
imprisonment. While McMahon was hurling stones at the saloon, the
saloonkeeper, Gus. Buergel, began an indiscriminate firing, to frighten the
noisy bum away. Buergel was arrested on the charge of discharging firearms but
was released on the payment of costs.
Ed. Mooney was arrested on the charge of disturbing
the peace, which offense was committed three weeks ago on Case street. Mooney
fled and went to Stuart, Iowa, returning Saturday last, when an officer
spotted him. He paid the costs.
