 REPORT OF SECRETARY OF STATE.
On the 12th inst., Elisha Cutler Jr, Secretary of State, submitted to the
General Assembly the following report:--
In reply to a resolution of the Senate of yesterday, I have the honor to
transmit to you an abstract of the returns
of the census of this State fur the year 1847, showing the counties arranged
according to the number of inhabitants in
each, and the time when said returns were filed in this office.  By which it
will be perceived that the counties of Van
Buren, Jefferson, Jackson, Dubuque, Benton, Marion, Scott and Winneshiek,
were not filed in this office until after the
time prescribed by the 3d section of the 8th chapter of the laws of lowa of
1846-7.
No returns have yet been received from the county of Buchanan, and it may
be proper to state that it is doubtful if
this county and that of Winneshiek were organized in time to render the
assessors and clerks of the same liable for the
forfeiture oceasioned [sic] by the neglect of duly in the premises.
