DREADFUL HURRICANE
We learn from a gentleman who has just returned from Van Buren
co, Iowa,
that a most dreadful hurricane passed through part of that county
on
Wednesday night a week last. Our informant states that in Little
Cedar the
destruction of property has been great. The dwelling house of Mr.
Marshall
who resides near the timber through which the whirlwind passed,
was carried
away by the storm together with the whole of his household
furniture, &c.
The family, which consisted of seven, it appears had retired to
bed before
the storm came up, and strange as it may appear, the whole of the
building
was carried off without doing any bodily injury to any of its
inmates- a
small boy of the age of six years was missing and it was feared
he might
have been carried off and perished, but on the following morning
he was
found about two miles from the place upon the open prairie, to
which he had
wandered unconsciously. We also learn that a newly erected
building about
two miles from Mr. M's, was also uprooted and a large barn partly
finished
entirely blown down. Our informant further states that a large
number of
horses, oxen, cows, swine and sheep were next morning found
strewn around
for several miles upon the prairie, he found trees, posts and
rails,
distributed in all directions. Where the storm spent its fury,
our informant
did not learn; he says from the appearance of the timber, he
should judge it
to have been about a mile in width and to have continued its
course in a
northwest direction.--Lee County Dem.
