Writes of Experiences.
FARRAGUT—Lt. (j g) William G. Bennett, who is a communications officer on board an escort aircraft carrier in the Pacific war theater has written his wife, who resides here and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bennett of Shenandoah, and other relatives, telling about the part his ship played in the Leyte battle last October. The carrier on which he is a member of the crew also took part in the invasion of Peleliu island in September and is still with the fleet in the Philippine area. It is now known when he will be able to return to the states.

Home on Furlough.
ESSEX—Lt. Frank F. Hilgerson arrived Tuesday to spend a furlough of three weeks with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. D. Hilgerson. He has been in the South Pacific for nearly three years.

Home from England.
RIVERTON—T. Sgt. Duane Manrose has returned home from England after completing 250 combat hours over enemy territory. He has been awarded the air medal with three oak leaf clusters and the distinguished flying cross. Rev. Manrose, seaman 1/c, who has just been graduated from the signal and armed guard school at the Great Lakes Naval Station, also has been home, both guests of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Manrose, south of Riverton.

Conclude Furlough Visit.
FARRAGUT—Lynn Bickett of the coast guards, his wife and daughter, have returned to St. Louis where he is stationed. They were accompanied by his brother, Keith Bickett, a student at the Mortuary Science at St. Louis, and his wife. While here they visited their parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. F. Bickett, and Mrs. Keith’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Will Livingston.

Transferred.
ATLANTIC—Pvt. Hubert K. Porter, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh A. Porter, of Cumberland, arrived Tuesday to spend five days while enroute from Camp Hood, Tex., to Fort George Meade, Md. He is assigned to an anti-tank unit.

Mr. and Mrs. Joe Lawton of southwest of here have received the purple heart award for their son, Lt. Kenneth Lawton, lost last Jan. 16, 1944 on a bombing raid off northern New Guinea. Lt. Lawton, co-pilot of a Mitchell B-25 bomber, has been missing since his plane dropped its bomb load on a harbor installation and is listed by the War Department as dead.

FIVE ENLISTED AT NAVY OFFICE

Enlistment of one local youth and four southwestern Iowans in the navy was announced Wednesday by Chief Recruiter E. S. Newton at the local recruiting station.

Those who have been enlisted include Gerald Chapman Knowles, son of Lamonie C. Knowles, 3200 Avenue K; Calvin Coolidge Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles M. Smith of Woodbine; Alfred James Springer, son of Milton Wilburton Springer of Honey Creek; Eldon Dean Coin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Roland Coin of Coin, and Donald Duane Hester, son of Mr. and Mrs. Luchen Edward Hester of Mondamin.
