MAN GUILTY OF CHARGES BY GIRL
After being out all night a jury of Judge William G. Bonner's
criminal court has returned a verdict of guilty against Preston
G. Webb, charged with a statutory offense against Mabel Hughes, a
minor. The jury recommended clemency. The penalty is life or any
term of years. Judge Bonner is expected to pass sentence of one
year in Anamosa upon the man. Sentence will be pronounced Jan.
22.
Jack Daggs and William Shelton, both convicted of auto thefts,
were sentenced to five years each, by Judge Bonner this morning.

EIGHT ARE GIVEN PRISON SENTENCES
Eight persons convicted in district court last week were
sentenced Saturday. They are: Roy Cooney, operating auto without
consent of owner, 60 days in county jail; Leslie Stanley,
breaking and entering, 10 years in Anamosa; Earl Burgess,
breaking and entering, 10 years in Fort Madison; Ernest Peters,
forgery, 15 years in Anamosa; Benny Burgess, brother of Earl,
breaking and entering, 10 years in Anamosa; Preston G. Webb,
rape, two years in Anamosa; George McKintry, grand larceny, five
years in Fort Madison; and Carl Kelso, grand larceny, five years
in Anamosa.
Marie Blade alias Marie Ballanger, charged with a liquor
nuisance, entered a plea of not guilty when arraigned before
Criminal Judge William G. Bonner.
