Boosts Mrs. Fleur For Co. Recorder - Dale Shaw Speaks in
Behalf of Vetran's Widow
"A woman competent to handle the distribution of
more than $5,000,000 a year from the county's fund to the schools
and townships of Polk county, is competent to serve as county
recorder," said Dale Shaw in addressing a political rally at
Shelburn Gardens, Twelfth and Center streets Friday night.
"The treasurer's office handles $9,000,000 a year," Mr.
Shaw continued. "Much of this went thru the hands of Mrs.
E.O. Fleur while she served as an assistant deputy in that
office, and one of the most efficient deputies it ever had."
Mr. Shaw scotched the report which has gained considerable
circulation during the closing days of the campaign that Mrs.
Fleur is independently provided for and does not need the
position for which she is a candidate. He declared that her home
is not free from indebtedness, that the income she receives from
two unsaleable small properties in the southeast bottoms is
barely sufficient to pay taxes and that her total income from the
government is but $57.50 a month. This is the government payment
on war risk insurance policy carried by her husband, Capt. E.O.
Fleur, who was killed in France four years ago last month.
"To those who have said that a woman should not run for
office against a man, I would only answer that if Captain Fleur
were living she would not be seeking any office," Shaw
declared.
Other candidates who addressed the meeting last night included
Park Findley for sheriff, A.O. Hauge for state representative,
Vernon Seeburger for county attorney, W.D. Baldwin for clerk of
the district court and George King for West Des Moines member of
the board of supervisors.
Choir Concert
The vested choir of the First Methodist church, under
the leadership of Ross Vernon Miller, will close the year's work
with a sacred concert at the church at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Special
new anthems have been prepared for this final appearance of the
choir.
The following officers have been elected for the new year,
beginning Sept. 1: President, Mrs. M.T. Brewer; vice-president,
Earl Cook; secretary, Miss Sawtelle; treasurer, Richard Ashman;
librarian, Earl Cook; and reporter, Dr. M.T. Brewer.
Tries to Hang Herself in Jail
Jeanette Peterson (colored), held in the city jail on a
vagrancy charge, attempted to kill herself by hanging Saturday
afternoon. Maude Wilkinson, policewoman, prevented the act. In
making her rounds about the cells she noticed Jeaneet standing on
top of one of the double beds with a heavy cord around her neck,
prepared to jump. The girl was discouraged, for someone informed
hre she would be sent to the penitentiary for ten years on the
charge.
Bride of the Past Week
A pretty home wedding of the past week was that of Miss
Elberta Soule, daugher of Mr. and Mrs. E.I. Soule, 1314
Twenty-seventh and Mr. Fredlock F. Little, of Baltimore, Md.
which took place Thursday evening at the home of the bride's
parents. Mr. and Mrs. Little are now taking a motor trip thru
Minnesota and will be at home in Des Moines after July. The bride
attended Drake and is an Alpha Chi Omega member. Mr. Little is
representative for the Sinclair Oil company.
Interested in Politics
A little group intensely interested in the coming
election is that which includes Mrs. Vernon Seeburger and
children, Louise Marvin and Raymond Charles, wife and children of
one of the candidates for county attorney. Mrs. Seeburger, as
well as her husband, is prominent in civic and club life of the
city. She is a member of the Association of University Women, and
Theta Sigma Phi sorority. While Mr. Seeburger was taking his
liberal arts and law work at the State univeresity of Iowa, she
was completing her work in the school of journalism at the
University of Missouri.
Before her marriage, Mrs. Seeburger was a newspaper writer,
having been connected with Des Moines papers. It was their mutual
interest in trials of cases that first interested Mr. and Mrs.
Seeburger in each other; however, she having been clerk of the
grand jury and also a reporter in superior court in her home
county of Page, when Mr. Seeburger first entered practice of law
in Des Moines, nine years ago.
