OIL FOUND IN ILLINOIS - Des Moines People Own Land Where Wells
Are Located.
Several Des Moines people will be benefited by the discovery of
oil on the lands they own in Edwards county, Ill. The oil has
been discovered on the property of Hugh Sheperd, who died two
years ago at Indianola, and who divided the property among his
heirs, many of whom live in Des Moines. There are ten wells on
the property, each producing fifty barrels a day, and Senator W.
H. Berry of Indianola and Henry Sheperd of Des Moines are in
Edwards county today looking over the property.
Beside Henry Sheperd, who has a sixth interest in the 260 acres
left by Hugh Sheperd, Mrs. Frank Van Pelt of 1220 Twelfth street
has a sixth interest, Senator Berry also has a sixth interest ,
as have the estate of Thomas Davis at Salina, Kas., and Thomas
Sheperd at Fort Scott, Kas. Miss Frances McMillan of Des Moines
and Henry McMillan of Stroud, Okla., own the remainder.
