House to-day between John Skane, the 'bus man, and George Turner,
an employe of the Bedford Lumber Co., in which Skane's eyes were
badly blacked and Turner's face and neck dangerously cut. Turner
says Skane cut him with a knife. Skane was arrested charged with
assault with intent to murder. He denies using the knife and says
Turner's face was cut by a windown glass which they broke in the
fight.
A MURDER COMMITTED
Council Bluffs, Dec. 13 -- A man supposed to be J. Hughes, of New
York, was fatally shot early this morning in a quarrel here with
three companions. The one that fired the shot is named Walter
Bennett. The latter was arrested in Omaha a week ago charged with
vagrancy. It is said the cause of the shooting was Hughes'
refusal to divide the spoils of a crooked deal in Lincoln,
Nebraska, some time ago. The assailants escaped.
ANOTHER CHAMPION CORN HUSKER
CARSON [Pottawattamie co.], Dec 11. -- Register
Correspondence. -- Seeing
a few days since a challenge in The
Register for a better
record of corn husking than one sent from Atlantic, I send you
the following. On November 23d, Henry Setz, a boy 18 years old,
husked 155 bushels in nine hours and thirty-eight minutes. He has
never husked corn but one season before this. The work was done
on the farm of R. F. Jones, who is a member of the County Board
of Supervisors. Mr. Jones weighed the corn and vouches for the
statement herein contained.

Hunter, so long confined to the house with a leg broken for the
second time, is now able to walk around on crutches.
Geo. B. Hunter, our genial postmaster, is laid up with

The musical and literary entertainment given at Union Hall last
evening by Misses Carrie McAyeal, Metta Mills and Lillian Weeks,
of your city, although not greeted by as good an audience as it
merited, gave universal satisfaction, and should they favor us
with another date would be greeted with a goodly audience.

Walnut Street.
In the District Court yesterday J. W. Andrews was sentenced to
serve two years in the penitentiary for robbing Chaffee's

burglarizing the Des Moines Bleachery last summer. The case of

A miner named Gus Erickson working in the Coon Valley mine was
the victim of a serious accident yesterday afternoon. He was
mining in his chamber when a big piece of slate fell from the

accounts was lying as comfortably as could be expected with fair
prospects of saving the injured member.
For some time the officers of this city have been looking for one
E. Gerhart, who is wanted in Red Oak for assault with intent to
commit murder. Yesterday Detective Duval met his man on the
corner of Fifth
and Mulberry, in company with two brothers. Duval immediately put
him under arrest, all three making a determined resistance until
the sight of a revolver calmed their ardor. Sheriff Painter will
probably be on
to-day for the prisoner. Gerhart is noted as being a bad man, and
the utmost possible attention is being paid him.
A man whose real name is said to be John Zanderholm, and who has
frequently figured in the papers as "John Sandholm,"
was arrested last night by Fireman Taylor Brewer, who is in
charge of the new East Side
Chemical engine house, under the following circumstances; The man
Zanderholm had, is said, been discharged from a certain saloon,
yesterday, where he had been employed as bartender, and after
filling up
with fighting fluid, he armed himself with a self-cocking
six-shooter and proceeded to have revenge. Brewer, who was
passing, heard the first shot fired, and rushed in to see what
the trouble was, and before he could secure the man he fired
another shot. Brewer reached for the revolver, and again he
pulled the trigger, the shot going just over Brewer's shoulder.
They then clinched, and Brewer succeeded in getting
hold of the weapon, and also brought the man to the West Side
Headquarters from the East Side. The fireman deserves credit for
going outside the regular line of duty, and it may be said
endangering his
life, in his effort to preserve the peace and dignity of the
Commonwealth. Zanderholm languishes on a charge of firing a
revolver in a building.
