This club met at the court house, Feb 26, 1876, 1:30 P.M. -
President Robinson in the chair. Secretary Harris read minutes of
the last meeting, which were approved. Several gentlemen signed

News Summary.
-The most important item of news for Iowa we have to record this
week, is the decision of the Supreme Court of the United States
in favor of Council Bluffs as the eastern terminus of the Union
Pacific railroad. This this long contest between Omaha and the
Bluffs is settled forever.
-The Register says that a party of fifteen men, from
Story and Polk counties, propose to start for the Black Hills
March first. Ames is the initial point, and they intend going by
way of Sioux City. John Johnston is captain of the company. They
will take ten teams and provisions for three months.
-On the night of the 23d ult. a fire in Lemars, Iowa destroyed a
large building occupied by four families, and a woman and three
small children were burned to death in the ruins, and when found
were burned to cinder. The husband is now a raving maniac.
-There seems to be a fair prospect that the Des Moines & Fort
Dodge road will be extended to Humboldt county this year.
-Scarlet fever is raging in a violent form at Dubuque. Even grown
persons are dying with it. There were seven burials in that city
on the 22d.
-Mrs. Elizabeth C. Harvey, of Davenport, has been indicted for
the murder of Mrs. Brien, who was alleged to have committed
suicide by poison last July.
-Mr. W.W. Maynard, of Council Bluffs, died last week in that
city. He was once a prominent man in Iowa journalism, and in
that, as in all of life's relations, he was esteemed wherever
known.
-A large building, known as the Stuart house, was destroyed by
fire at Stuart, Iowa, on Saturday last. Loss, $25,000; insured
for $10,000.
-A fire at Ft. Dodge on Monday last destroyed Mrs. Bassett's
photograph gallery. Loss $4,000; insured for $2,500.
