SENEY:

The Ladies Aid Society met in the home of Mrs. Henry Reints Wednesday
afternoon.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Becker, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Becker, sons Bobby and Jerry,
were Thanksgiving Day guests in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Woodhouse
near Hudson, S. Dak.

Miss Ruth McArthur returned to Westside, Ia., Monday morning to resume her
school duties after spending Thanksgiving vacation with her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Roy McArthur.

A nice crowd was present at the Thanksgiving services in the church
Wednesday evening. Services were conducted by Rev. Richard Mohler, the
pastor.

Mrs. Marion Chapman was taken to the Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars
Thursday suffering with an attack of pneumonia.

Grammar room pupils of the Seney school who were neither absent nor tardy
during the past 6 weeks were: Ethel Ewin, Lawrence Olson, Edith Berkenpas,
Jean Berkenpas, Junior Connor, Leona Janssen, Calmer Olson. Those who have a
perfect attendance since school began are Ethel Ewin, Calmer Olson, Leona
Janssen and Jean Berkenpas.

Mrs. Marshall Rees entertained a large group of ladies at a missionary tea
in her home Tuesday afternoon. Social games and stunts were enjoyed and in
closing a delicious luncheon was served. Guests from a distance were: Mrs.
Peter Keizer, of Alton, Mrs. Oscar Gatzke, of Union twp.

Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Albert and family, Mr. and Mrs. Will Albert and
family, E. F. Anstine attended a family reunion on Thursday Day in the home
of Rev. and Mrs. George Dunn in Sioux City.

Irene Duhr of West LeMars visited friends in Seney, Sunday.

Mr. and Mrs. Ray Hinde, Betty Lea, Joan and Max Hinde; Mr. and Mrs. Jack
Hinde; Mr. and Mrs. Glen Hinde, son Darrell, daughter Dorothy were supper
guests in the home of Mrs. Stella Criswell in LeMars on Thanksgiving Day.

C. F. Nanninga, Lloyd and Howard Nanninga were Sioux City business callers
Tuesday.

Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Buss and son Stanley spent Thanksgiving Day in the home
of Mrs. Buss’ parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Darville, in Sioux City.

Dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. August Utech Sunday were Mr. and Mrs. Lizzie
Buss, son Earl and Mr. and Mrs. Glen Detloff.

A Thanksgiving party was enjoyed in the community hall by the members of the
Volunteers Sunday School class Friday evening. Decorations and favors in
keeping with the holiday season were used and a program of games was enjoyed
until a late hour when a delicious luncheon was served to about 25 folks
present.

Mr. and Mrs. Alex Nanninga and family, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Hinde, Mr. and Mrs.
Martin Nanninga, of Beresford, S. Dak., and Alvin Heuther of Gann Valley, S.
Dak., were guests in the C. F. Nanninga home Thanksgiving.

Mrs. Harold Rees and baby daughter returned home from the Sacred Heart
Hospital in LeMars Wednesday.

The Married Meeters Sunday School class held a party in the hall Tuesday
evening. One enjoyable feature of the evening’s entertainment was a
scavenger hunt. Following the scavenger hunt various games and stunts were
played. Lunch was served in closing.

Mrs. Mary Daugherty and son Jack were Thanksgiving Day dinner guests of Mr.
and Mrs. Philip Simeon in LeMars.

Miss Lois Berkenpas is very sick at her home in Seney.

Teachers and pupils of the Seney school enjoyed a four day vacation last
week. Miss Arlene Boysen spent her Thanksgiving vacation in her home in
LeMars and Miss Nina Forbes visited in the home of her brother, Edward of
Kingsley.

On Saturday, December 2, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Croon were married 25 years.
In the evening the following visitors helped them celebrate the happy
occasion: Mr. and Mrs. Otto Ludwigs and son Alfred; Mr. and Mrs. John
Hartmann and family; Mr. and Mrs. Albert Heeren and Edna and Lucille; Mrs.
Anna Wilken and children, Henry, Viola and Melvin; Mrs. Amelia Schultz and
family; Mr. and Mrs. John Lubben and family; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Freidberg;
Eddie, Louise, Regina, Clarence, and Clara Plueger. Pinochle and social
visiting were enjoyed by the gests and a delicious lunch was served at a
late hour.

Miss Minnie Von Hagel is assisting with the housework in the Fred Otto home.

Mr. and Mrs. Fred Ronsiek and family and Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Hauschild were
among those who were dinner guests in the George Borchers home near Merrill
on Sunday.

Mr. and Mrs. Fred Harms of LeMars, visited in the Mrs. Catherine Oltmann’s
home on Sunday afternoon.

Melvin and Sylvia Siebels entertained the Lutheran League on Sunday evening.
John and Minnie Von Hagel will entertain at the January meeting.

Mr. and Mrs. Fred Plueger and Darlene visited in the Martin Croon home on
Sunday evening.

The Ladies Aid met in the school on Wednesday afternoon. Mrs. John Lubben
was hostess. Mrs. Ernest Meyer will be hostess at the January meeting.

Several from here attended the Folkert Frerichs farm sale near Hawarden, on
Thursday, Dec. 7.

Mr. and Mrs. John Brabander and family were dinner guests in the Dick
Frerichs home on Sunday.

The school board of Grant township met in the Center School on Tuesday
evening.

Mrs. Will Werth Claimed By Death
Resident of Plymouth County In Girlhood

Mrs. W. J. Werth, well known resident of Plymouth county since girlhood,
died Wednesday at her home, 421 Second Avenue.

Maggie Reints, daughter of William H. Reints and Hilka Reints was born
February 3, 1874, near Foreston, Ill. She came to Stanton township,
Plymouth county, in 1885 and since that time she had made her residence in
Plymouth county. Her marriage to William Werth took place on April 24,
1900.

They established their home on a farm in Union township and continued to
make it their home and in 1912 they came to LeMars. She was a member of
Hildreth Memorial Evangelical church, having joined the church in 1913 under
the ministry of Rev. Thomas Koch.

Because of her failing health it was necessary that she and her husband
leave the farm. Since that time she had been a frequent sufferer and during
the last few years she has been under constant medical attention. A year
ago her condition became so serious it was thought she could not survive but
good care and constant attention made it possible for her to recover in
part. Her death came quite suddenly on December 13 as her husband was
attending her. She had been in fair health but her weakened condition was
apparent to those who were caring for her.

She is survived by her husband, William Werth, and two brothers, Miles
Reints, of LeMars and John, a large number of nephews and nieces Reints, of
Newkirk, Oklahoma, and many, many friends.

Mrs. Werth was a faithful wife and a loyal friend. She was especially
appreciative of her old neighbors and friends with whom she had been reared
and their visits were always welcomed. Her long years of suffering and ill
health were a burden, which was probably far heavier than anyone knew except
her husband. Following her last illness she seemed to bear these things
with greater strength and patience.

The funeral services will be held at Hildreth Memorial Evangelical
church on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. under the supervision of the pastor,
Rev. G. O. Thompson. Burial will be in the LeMars cemetery.

Mrs. Mary Moir Take By Death
Taught School Here In Pioneer Days

Mrs. Mary Moir, 77, resident of Plymouth and Sioux counties for over
fifty years died at her home 123 Third Avenue NW Thursday afternoon
following an illness of a year caused by failing powers and complications.

Mary Florence Tucker was born at Portsmouth, Ohio, March 14, 1862, where
she received her early education and engaged in the profession of teaching.

Coming to LeMars in the early eighties she taught school in Fredonia
township. She was married at Seney May 15, 1883, to George R. Moir and they
farmed successfully over fifty years on their place in Sioux county. On
retiring from active farm life they came to LeMars in 1935 and established a
comfortable home. Mr. Moir died April 7, 1936.

Mrs. Moir leaves six sons and a daughter, Rev. George Moir, Macon, Neb.,
Will Moir, LeMars, Carl R. Moir, Akron, Roy E. Moir, Sioux City, Mervin Moir
and Glen A. Moir of Orange City and Mrs. Lloyd Laughton of Elgin township,
20 grandchildren and one great grandchild. She also leaves a sister, Mrs.
Ella Moir, who lived with them and faithfully tended her in long illness.
Two brothers, George and Bert Tucker, who lived in LeMars in early days
preceded her in death.

Mrs. Moir was a member of the Methodist church. She enjoyed a large
acquaintance and was highly esteemed in a large circle of friends.

The funeral will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the residence with
services in the Methodist church at Seney at 2 o'clock. Rev. Richard
Mohler, the pastor will conduct the service. Interment will be made in the
Seney cemetery.

HONORED BY EAGLES

Akron Man Elected District President

At a district meeting of members of the Order of Eagles held at Akron
Sunday, Lowell L. Burrill, of Akron, was elected president of the Northwest
Iowa district. Fraternal Order of Eagles, William Geary, of Akron, was
elected temporary secretary.

Each Eagles aerie is represented on the board of directors, as follows:
William Van De Steeg of LeMars, Mr. Geary of Akron, P. K. Brandts of
Sheldon, J. Vetters of Cherokee, Frank Lang of Hawarden, Sanford Wallace of
Onawa and Merle Cox of Sioux City.

District meetings were announced as follows: January 21, Cherokee; February
18, Sheldon; March 17, Hawarden; April 21, LeMars; May 19, Onawa; June 16,
Akron; and July 21, Sioux City.

Relatives in LeMars were advised last week of the death of Mrs. Stephen
Hodgson on December 5 at her home in Kenmore, North Dakota. Mrs. Hodgson is
survived by her husband and three grown children who live in the vicinity of
Kenmore. Stephen Hodgson is a brother of the late Robert Hodgson and lived
in Plymouth county for many years.

Overnight guests on Monday in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Penning were Mrs.
James Thompson and sons, George and Harold. They came to attend funeral
services for John Osborne of Seney which were held on Tuesday.

Collision At Cross Roads Proves Fatal
Young Matron Killed and Others Injured

Mrs. Jos. Schierholt, 28, of Ashton, was killed and five others were cut and bruised in an automobile collision at a highway intersection, seven miles northwest of Rock Valley Friday.

The Schierholts were on their way to Marion, S.D., when their car collided with a machine driven by Jake Van Roeckel, of Doon.  Among the injured were Ben Schierholt, of Remsen, a brother of Jos. Schierhot, driver of the car, Herman Holdgrafer, father of the woman killed, and a four year old son of Jake Van Roeckel.  The injured were taken to the hospital at Hudson, S.D.

FINAL RITES HELD FOR CRASH VICTIM
Funeral services were held in St. Mary’s church at Remsen Thursday morning for Mrs. Jos. Schierholt, 30, of Ashton, Iowa, who was fatally injured at an intersection on the road south of Rock Valley Friday afternoon, when two automobiles collided.

Critically injured in the crash are Jos. Schierholt and Jake Van Roeckel. Ben Schierholt, a brother of Jos. Schierholt, and Herman Holdgrafer, father of Mrs. Schierholt were injured and a three year old son of Van Roeckel was badly cut.

Mrs. Schierholt, victim of the accident, leaves her husband and four small children.
