HOLD LAST RITES FOR MRS. N. R. KNAPP
Had Been Resident of Milnerville Community


A brief mention was made in these columns last week of the death of Mrs. N. R.
Knapp at her home, southeast of Westfield, on Wednesday evening, March 29,
1939, after an extended illness following a paralytic stroke, at the age of 63
years, 7 months and 16 days.

Lena Wilcox was born in Savanna, Illinois, August 13, 1875. Her early years
were spent in Savanna, where she completed her high school education. She came
with her parents to Akron, Iowa, in 1892. Following her arrival in Akron, she
taught school until February 17, 1897, when she was united in marriage with
Noah R. Knapp. Their first home was in Union county, S. D. In 1902 they moved
to their home, southeast of Westfield, where they have since resided. Mrs.
Knapp's survivors include her widower, N. R. Knapp; one son, Ward Knapp, who
resides on the home farm; a daughter, Mrs. Harry Nelson, of Akron; four
grandchildren, and two half-brothers, L. F. Whitney, of Tipton, Iowa, and
Clyde Whitney, of Amarillo Texas.

Her first interest was in her home and family, although every worthwhile
project received her ardent support. Her love for her church was second only
to her family. She was a leader and faithful worker in the Sunday school until
the time of her death. This esteemed woman will be sincerely missed and
mourned in the community where she has resided so many years.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 o'clock last Friday afternoon in the Akron
M. E. church, conducted by Rev. J. F. Moore. Hymns were sung by Miss Cloyee
Hasbrook, of Sioux City, sister of Mrs. Ward Knapp, with Mrs. Pearl Pollock at
the piano. Interment was in Riverside cemetery.

TWO LOCAL PEOPLE ARE SUMMONED
Last Bites for Bert Parker and John Eltjes Are Held This Week


Bert Parker passed away at his home in Akron, Sunday evening, April 2, 1939,
after a long period of illness, at the age of 39 years and 7 days.

Bert Parker, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Parker, was born in Westfield, Iowa,
March 26, 1900. He spent most of his life in Akron, working on farms in this
vicinity for a number of years. He was a young man of good character and.
industrious habits. Left to mourn his departure are his parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Wm. Parker, of Akron; a sister, Mrs. Ed. Thorp, of Akron; a brother, Bernard
Parker, of Clearwater, Calif., and many other relatives. An infant brother,
Charlie Ray, preceded him in death in 1906. The relatives have the sympathy of
many friends in their bereavement.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:45 from the home and in the
Akron M. E. church at 3:00 o'clock, conducted by the pastor, Rev. J. F. Moore.
Interment was in Riverside cemetery.

John Eltjes, 75, well known resident of northwestern Plymouth county for many
years, died at the Akron Hospital, Friday, March 31, 1939, following a brief
illness caused by influenza and infirmities of age.

Mr. Eltjes was born in Germany, May 2, 1864, and as a child came to the United
States with his parents, locating in Illinois. When a young man he came to
Iowa and lived at Ackley before coming to Plymouth county. He was employed as
a farm laborer in Preston and Grant townships, where he was widely known and
liked. For the past eighteen years he made his home with his nephew, Herman
Weyen, in Preston township. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Johanna
Gerdes, of Le Mars, and Mrs. John J. Schluter, of Madison, Minn., and two
brothers-in-law, John Weyen, of Grant township, and Laurin McGilvray, of
Wolsey, S. D. His mother, Mrs. Watje Eltjes, died in 1920.

The funeral was held Monday afternoon from the Herman Weyen residence and
services were conducted at Christ church, Mammen, Rev. Fred Bunge officiating.
Interment was in the Grant township cemetery.
