MANGLED CORPSE FOUND ON TRACK NORTH OF SENEY
BODY OF UNIDENTIFIED MAN PICKED UP ON RAILROAD RIGHT OF WAY
FINGER PRINTS ARE MADE
NO IDENTIFICATIONS MARKS ON BODY OR IN CLOTHING
The badly mangled body of a man, still unidentified, was found on the
railroad track two miles north of Seney Tuesday afternoon about 2 o'clock.
County Coroner S. H. Luken and Sheriff Frank Scholer were notified and went
out to make an investigation. Jos. Sutton, city police officer, went out in
an effort to make identification.
A railroad section foreman found the body shortly after the Omaha railroad
passenger, due in LeMars at 12:45, had passed through Seney. The man's head
and face were so badly crushed that it was impossible even to ascertain the
color of his eyes. Both arms and his legs had been severed.
Officers advanced the theory that the man had been riding "the blind"
between the first coach and the tender of the engine and had fallen from the
platform, to the tracks, the cars passing over him. Another theory is that
the man might have been walking along the tracks and been struck by the
train.
TAKE FINGER PRINTS
Sheriff Frank Scholer and Coroner S. H. Luken pieced together a tentative
description of the victim. Apparently he was between the ages of 45 and 50,
about 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighed about 145 pounds. His hair was dark
brown. He was clad in overalls and a blue shirt.
Sheriff Frank Scholer took the dead man's finger prints and forwarded them
Tuesday night to Washington for comparison with those on file with the
federal department of justice. Sheriff Scholer and County Coroner S. H.
Luken said no marks of identification were found either on the body or in
the man's clothing. Twenty cents were found beside the body on the railroad
tracks.
Splashes of orange paint on the victim's clothing are the only tangible clew
aiding officers in identifying the man. Sheriff Scholer said the paint
stains were of a color usually found in bridge or steel worker's clothing.
He planned to investigate to determine whether the man had been employed on
the Grand Avenue viaduct project in Sioux City.
The body was buried in the city cemetery Tuesday evening.
