LAST RITES FOR MRS. J. L. BALDWIN
Was Well Known Resident Of The County In The Early Eighties

Last rites were held Tuesday afternoon in the Beely mortuary chapel for Mrs.
Lucy Baldwin, aged 81, of Worthington, Minn., who died at her home there
February 22, from illness due to old age and complications.

Rev. F. E. Burgess, pastor of the First Methodist church, conducted the
services which were attended by a number of old friends and interment was
made in the city cemetery.

Lucy Abigail Benjamin was born February 4, 1852, in New York state where she
grew to young womanhood and was married to James L. Baldwin. Following
their marriage they lived for a few years in New York state and then came to
Iowa and located in Le Mars in the early eighties, moving several years
later to Minnesota where they farmed for eighteen years. They moved to
Worthington about twenty years ago to make their home.

Mr. Baldwin preceded his wife in death seventeen year ago. Three children
to them all died in infancy.

The family is well remembered by older residents in Le Mars and Fredonia
township.

TO HOLD OPEN HOUSE
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hodgson Will Celebrate Golden Wedding

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hodgson residing at 126 Seventh Street SE., pioneer
settlers in Plymouth County, will celebrate their fiftieth wedding
anniversary Tuesday, March 7. They will hold open house from 2 to 5 in
honor of the occasion.

Mr. and Mrs. Harold Dennis and son visited the first part of the week at the
R. E. Jones home. Mr. Dennis formerly worked in the jewelry store for Mr.
Jones. He is at present helping his father in the grain and coal business
in Randolph, Neb.

Mrs. John Riter died at her home in Rock Rapids, Ia., Sunday afternoon, at
the advanced age of 86 years and 4 months. Mrs. Riter spent some time in the
home of her son, Ed. Riter, near Seney, this county, and was known by many
people in that community. Other children surviving are J. Philip Riter, of
Ireton, Ia.; George, of Brookings, S.D.; Charles, of Vermillion, S.D.; John
and Lester, and Mrs. Jack Kern. The past six years Mrs. Riter has been
living with her son, at Rock Rapids, where the funeral was held Wednesday
afternoon. Mrs. T. M. Shawhan, of this city, attended her grandmother’s
funeral.

The Auxiliary Committee will be at the city hall Saturday, from 2:00 till
4:00 for the distribution of clothing for the needy.

Robert Brown, who is taking a veterinary course at State college, Ames,
spent the spring vacation of one week at his home here.

S.D. Jacobson, a well known LeMars insurance man, representing the Equitable
Life Assurance Company of New York City, who had many friends in Akron
through frequent visits here during the past few years, died quite suddenly
from a heart attack Friday morning, March 17, while visiting relatives at
his old home town, Paullina, Iowa. He was in usual good spirits during the
evening and planned to return to LeMars. Suddenly not feeling well, he
telephoned his wife that he was remaining over night. About 2 o’clock Friday
morning a member of the household went to his room to ascertain his
condition and found that death had come. His age was 33, and his untimely
departure is mourned by his widow, seven sisters and two brothers. Mr.
Jacobson was a fine, clean young man, esteemed by all who knew him. He was
particularly well known among local golfers, being an ardent devotee of that
outdoor pastime. He was a member of the Presbyterian church and of the
Masonic fraternity. Rev. F. F. Robinson, of this city, formerly pastor of
the M. E. church at Paullina, conducted the funeral service in the
Presbyterian Church there Monday afternoon, assisted by Rev. DePree of the
LeMars Presbyterian Church. Interment was at Paullina.

LIVED ALL LIFE IN SAME HOUSE

Mrs. Agnes Tindall, of LeMars, a pioneer resident of the Adaville vicinity,
received the following clipping from a newspaper in England making mention
of the death and funeral of a relative:

“The funeral took place at Langton Churchyard, Duns, on Saturday, of Mr.
P.C. Weir, Langton Mill, one of the oldest farmers in the district.

“Mr. Weir, who succeeded his father in the tenancy of Langton Mill about
thirty years ago, was 77. He took no part in public affairs, but was much
esteemed in the community. He died in the house in which he was born on the
first night it was occupied by his parents. During his long life he had
never slept under any other roof.”

GIRL WANTS TO KNOW HER FAMILY
Former Postmaster Hears From Mrs. D.W. Belt Jr. In Dallas

J. E. Kelley, formerly postmaster of LeMars, has received the following
letter. If anyone knows the persons asked for is requested to write:

March 22, 1933
Mr. James Kelley,
LeMars, Iowa.
Dear Sir: I wrote you last week asking for the name of the postmaster at
LeMars in 1917. I take it, that you were the postmaster then by the reply I
received today.

My letter will be either of no importance to you or a great deal. I am
trying to locate the parents of my niece’s mother, the mother died in 1918.
I have raised this child, (my brother’s child.) She has reached an age,
where I think she should contact her grandparents not for any reason except
that she should know her mother’s family. My brother’s name is Harry
Simmons. All I ever knew was the first name of the wife (Ann.) I sincerely
hope this will end my search for (Betty) the child is most anxious to know
her family. The only thing I had to work on was an off-hand way. Years ago
Ann, I believe wrote me her father was postmaster at LeMars. If you are not
the father of this girl, this letter will seem utterly ridiculous to you.
The other information I have is that there was a large family of boys, 4 or
5, and two girls in this family. So perhaps, LeMars being a small place, you
would know of the family.

I sincerely hope I have not infringed on your time by such a disconnected
letter, but I have known of no other way. Hoping to have a reply at your

SLEET BLAMED FOR ACCIDENT
Mrs. Glen Keough Injured When Auto Hits Parked Automobile Near Here

Mr. and Mrs. Glen Keough, while driving along the highway about four miles
north of LeMars, Friday afternoon, had the misfortune of colliding into the
back of a parked automobile belonging to a salesman. Mrs. Keough received a
cut on the forehead and one on the knee besides other bruises and minor
injuries. She was taken to the LeMars clinic where stitches were taken in
her forehead and knee.

The accident occurred when a salesman whose name was not learned, stopped to
wipe sleet off his car. With visibility being very poor at the time, Mr.
Keough was driving with his head out the window trying to see the road. Not
seeing the parked auto on his right, he ran into it. A passing motorist
brought Mrs. Keough to the clinic.

Both autos were badly damaged in the accident but the salesman and Mr.
Keough were not injured.

DEATH CLAIMS OLD SETTLERS
Ben Helmrichs Passes Away At His Home In This City Tuesday

Ben Helmrichs, well known resident of Plymouth county and LeMars for many
years, died at his home, 215 Third Avenue NW, Tuesday, March 28, at the age
of seventy-five years. His death was due to complications and old age.

Berend Helmrichs, son of Hinrich Helmrichs and his wife, Christine, nee
Wilken, was born on April 11, 1858, at Uthover, Kreiss Wittmund
Ostfriesland, Germany. He came to this county when twenty-seven years of
age, settling first at Coleridge, Neb. He remained there a short time and
then came to Iowa, working here and there in the neighborhood of LeMars.

In 1889 he was united in marriage with Mary Rickert. Mrs. Helmrichs died
November last. Mr. Helmrichs farmed in Preston township until 1910 when he
came to LeMars. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.

The funeral will be held this afternoon in St. John’s Lutheran Church at 2
o’clock.

The service will be in the English language with the pastor, Rev. J. J.
Vollmar, in charge. Rev. Theo. Meyer, of the Preston township Lutheran
Church, will speak in the German language. Interment will be made in the
LeMars City Cemetery.

Mr. Helmrichs leaves one daughter, Mrs. John Bohlken, of Ireton, five
grandchildren and one great grandchild, one brother John Helmrichs of
Ireton, a sister in Germany, many other relatives and friends.

Mr. Helmrichs was a fine citizen and neighbor and enjoyed the respect of all
who knew him.

CRAIG RESIDENT DIES
Mrs. Jack Ames Succumbs To Infirmities of Age

Mrs. Elizabeth Ames, wife of John Ames, resident of Plymouth county, died at
her home near Craig Tuesday, March 28, after an illness due to infirmities
of age. She had been seriously ill the past few months. She was about 78
years old.

Mrs. Ames was left an orphan at an early age and was brought up by a family
named Babson. She was married to John Ames and they farmed near Craig for
the past thirty years. She leaves her husband to mourn her death.

Mrs. Ames was highly regarded in the community and was liked and respected
in a large circle of friends and acquaintances.

The funeral was held in St. Joseph Catholic church in Struble Wednesday,
Rev. J. B. Greteman, the pastor, officiating and the interment made in the
Struble cemetery.

Alfred Winterfeld Is Chosen To Head Affairs For Ensuing Two Years

At the city election held in Craig, a clean sweep of old officials was made
and a new mayor and city council elected. The officers elected are Alfred
Winterfeld, mayor; Emil Schultz, assessor; Michael Ludwigs, treasurer; F. H.
Oloff, H. F. Baack, Walter Baack, Henry Eilers and Nelson Hutton,
councilmen.

Mr. Winterfeld succeeds R. F. Green, the present mayor. The contest for
offices brought out a large vote.

MRS ROBERT L. DEMPSTER DIES FOLLOWING AN ILLNESS
OF FOURTEEN MONTHS

Mrs. Dempster, wife of Robert L. Dempster, well known business man of
LeMars, died at her home, 215 Second Avenue SE, Wednesday morning at the age
of 36 years, following a long and painful illness of fourteen months
duration.

The news of her death cast a gloom among a large circle of friends and
acquaintances with whom she was a favorite, due to her personality and
lovable qualities. Her death in early life comes as a shock to the bereaved
husband and children bereft of the care of a mother.

Since becoming a resident of LeMars, Mrs. Dempster gained many friendships.
Prior to coming to LeMars to reside she was an efficient and popular teacher
in the Plymouth county schools.

Her maiden name was Wilma Coons and she was born November 22, 1896, at
Roseville, Ill. The family moved from Roseville to Edina, Missouri, when she
was a girl of ten years. They came to Plymouth county in 1921 and later
returned to Missouri.

Wilma Coons received a good education, attending the public schools in Edina
and the State Teachers college at Kirksville, Mo. She taught in country
schools in Knox and Scotland counties, Missouri, for five years and coming
to Plymouth county was a teacher in the Union township schools for two
years.

She was united in marriage September 28, 1925, at Boone, Iowa, with Robert
L. Dempster, of LeMars.

She leaves to mourn her untimely death her husband, Robert L. Dempster, two
daughters, Bonnie Marie and Margaret Ann, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George
Coons, of Edina, Mo., three sisters, Esther Coons, of LeMars, Mildred Coons,
of Rockford, Ill., Mrs. Millard Cory, of Kirksville, Mo.

Final Rites This Afternoon
The funeral will be held this afternoon with services at the First Baptist
church, Plymouth Street S.W Rev. T. P. Potter officiating and interment will
be made in the city cemetery.
