YANKS
Pvt. Herbert Jacobsen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin
Jacobsen, is now stationed at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Ind., his
parents have learned. Herbert had been in Texas and Virginia
camps prior to his latest address. With a Guard unit, Pvt.
Jacobsen, 19, entered the service last June. He is anxious to
have THE DEMOCRAT reach him in his new station. The Jacobsens
live on a farm north of Emmetsburg.
Capt. Harold Zarhndt, son of Mrs. Paul Zahrndt of Emmetsburg, is
expected to reach Emmetsburg soon, after more than three years
overseas service. Harold entered the army before Pearl Harbors
attack and prior to that he was employed in New York, so it has
been approximately five years since he has had an opportunity to
come home. He has been with a communications outfit overseas.
Among Whittemore servicemen recently discharged is Sgt. L. J.
Doyle, a veteran of long service in Italy who was later
transferred to the Philippines. Sgt. Doyle, known as Mickey
was discharged at Fort Leavenworth.
George Higgins is another Whittemore boy, a marine from the 2nd
and 4th divisions at Okinawa and other Pacific spots, who has
been discharged.
S. Sgt. Cletus Muller arrived home from Germany last week with a
discharge. An engineer with a bombing squadron, Cletus has the
Purple Heart. His older brother, Pvt. Harold Muller, was the
first Whittemore man to be killed in action in the Pacific in
December 42. Several soldier friends of Harolds
visited his grave, which they described as being in a beautifully
kept cemetery in New Guinea.
Robert Gengler, stationed on the USS Knoxville, has received his
discharge and has joined his wife and family in Whittemore. He
served with the Coast Guard.
S. Sgt. Thomas Elbert is back from long service in the Pacific
theater but has been hospitalized in Denver, Colo., since his
return. He is a son of Mrs. Cecelia Elbert.
Pfc. Francis G. Joyce, son of Tom Joyces here, arrived in
Emmetsburg last Wednesday for an over-Christmas leave. He has
been at Fort Bragg, N.C. and must return there December 28th.
Francis is with a field artillery unit and has been in the army
32 months.
Louis Joynt has arrived in Emmetsburg from Foster Field, Texas,
and has received his discharge from the Army after more than four
years service. He served for three years in Texas before being
sent to Foster Field.
