-T.L. McCowan, of Bedford, has been attending court at
this place during the past week.
-We are under obligations to John Weidner for a premium squash.
-An immense stock of new saddles at Dan. Ridenour's which will be
sold at reasonable prices.
-In the case of State vs H. Baughm, which was the most
exciting suit of the week, the jury after being out thirty hours,
acquitted Mr. Baughm.
-During the week we had many pleasant calls from our friends and
acquaintances, and among whom were D.M. Farrens, L. Davison, E.M.
Burch, and Martin Bisby, the "Nasby" of Center
post-office. They are all social, wide-awake gentlemen, and with
whom we hope to meet often.
-W.F. Montgomery, of Colfax township, gave us a pleasant call on
Friday last, payed for his paper, and ordered one to a friend of
his in Kentucky.
-We learn that George Ribble has manufactured over two hundred
gallons of wine from his crop of grapes, and that he expects to
make about as much more.
-The first number of the Adams County Telegram has been
received. It is published by E.D. Lunt & T.L. Kames. It is
independent in politics, but is a good county paper, and we hope
it may be successful.
-Hon. Wm. Butler, Jacob Butler and J.H. Powers started on
Wednesday last for Baltimore, to attend the meeting of the
Knights Templars of the United States, that meet there on the
19th inst. We hope they will have a pleasant trip and safe
return.
-We are in receipt of the first number of a new democratic paper
called The New Departure, published at Corning, Iowa, by
Ed C. Russell, and it is a neat, spicy and well gotten up 28
column sheet.
Clarinda School.
The Clarinda school commmenced on Monday morning last,
and all the teachers as previously announced were at their post.
The following is the number of pupils in each department at the
commencement of the term:
Colored department, J. Maiden, 13 pupils
1st department, Miss Josie Berry teacher, 53 pupils
2d department, Miss E. Hutchings teacher, 46 pupils
3d department, Miss R. Ellis teacher, 39 pupils
4th department, Miss C.S. Turner teacher, 32 pupils
5th department, Miss Mary A. Loranz teacher, 37 pupils
Grammar department, Miss M.L. Bennett teacher, 27 pupils
High school department, Prof. E.G. Glenn teacher, 13 pupils
Whole number of pupils in attendance, 260.
Incidents and Accidents
-Mr. Allen, near Scranton, Iowa, in passing by a horse
was kicked in the stomach, and died almost instantly.
-Two children of Mrs. Paul Schisler of Iowa Township, near
Lansing, Iowa, fell into a pond while playing the other day, and
were drowned.
-Mrs. Jeff. Stone was canning tomatoes at Newton, Iowa, the other
day, when a can exploded, buring her face and eyes terribly.
