Farmer Makes Gruesome Find
Primghar Bell: Ed Luhrs made a gruesome find on
his farm east of Primghar Saturday when he came upon the skull of
a man lying in the field about forty yards from a haystack.
Clothing was also found and two pocket books, one containing $75
and the other 56 cents and a check made payable to Henry Numsen,
signed by Ernest Krusfeldt. The clothing was identified as
belonging to Mr. Numsen, who has been missing from his home at
Hartley since October 14. Not enough of the body of the dead man
could be found to prove how or when he came by his death, hogs
having eaten the flesh and destroyed the bones. Mr. Numsen was a
bachelor, 63 years of age, living along at Hartley. He was an
uncle of Mrs. Ernest Krusfeldt, of Hartley, and his aged mother
resides at Remsen.

Fergus S. McKean
The Innisfall Province, Alberta, Canada, has the
following to say on the death of Fergus S. McKean, a former
resident of this community.
The tragic passing of Mr. F. S. McKean removes one of the
prominent citizens of the Dickson district. Born at Anamosa,
Iowa, sixty-two years ago, he came to Alberta in 1910 and had
thus been twenty-two years in our midst. A man of affairs, his
life was one of busy interest and he took an active part in the
development of the western settlement. He was one of the leading
farmers of the community; a director of the Mountain View Live
Stock Marketing Association; an auctioneer and Secretary of the
Dickson Drainage District.
Mr. McKean finished threshing at noon on Thursday and after lunch
took his axe and went into the bush with the intention of cutting
some wood. As he did not return at supper time his people became
anxious and west to look for him. Not being successful a search
party was organized, but it was not until about five next morning
that his lifeless body was discovered. Apparently he had sat down
on a log and collapsed. Coroner Dr. G. C. Wagner and Constable
Ball of Innisfall went out to investigate and it was decided that
an inquest was not necessary, death being from natural causes.
The funeral under the direction of Mr. R. D. Sheffield took place
on Sunday, October 23rd. Service conducted by the Rev. P. Nyholm
was at the Dickson church and interment was made in the church
burying ground. He leaves a widow, one daughter, and two
grandchildren.

Fred Stephen Nott, eldest son of Thomas B. and Flora A. Nott, was
born October 9, 1874 on the Nott homestead northeast of Calumet
and passed away at his home in Calumet on Nov. 9, 1932, of
apoplexy at the age of 58 years and one month. He spent his
entire life in and near the community in which he was born. He
was a graduate of the Sutherland High School and of the Cedar
Rapids Business College.
He was united in marriage to Beatrice Henderson of Calumet in
June 1907. She preceded him in death in May 1918. Two children
were born to this union. In July 1919 he was united in marriage
to Margaret S. Gray of Cherokee. Four children were born to this
union; one, a son, died at birth.
As a citizen of Calumet he has been active in bettering its
welfare in many ways. He was for four years following his
graduation assistant cashier of the local bank. Later he owned
and operated an automobile and repair show and was an automobile
salesman. In the installation of an electric light plant for the
benefit of citizens of Calumet he performed a public service
which is worthy of mention. He served the town as mayor for six
years from 1922 to 1928. In the last years of his life he owned
and operated an oil station near his home in Calumet.
Fred Nott is survived by his second wife and five children; one

greatly missed by his family, friends and community. It can truly
be said of him, "well done, good and faithful servant."

home first near Sutherland, then Royal, Hartley, Sioux City, then
again at Royal. In these various homes she made numerous friends,
whose many kindnesses where a consolation and comfort to her in
her long weeks of suffering. The abundance of flowers constantly
sent to her at the hospital and to the temporary home in Sioux
City testify to their appreciation of her life of service to
others. Even her physician gave way to emotion when he realized
the inevitable outcome for this woman whose face had so well
portrayed the beautiful life she led. She lived that others might

S. C. Flinders Passes Away - Death of Prominent Citizen
of Sutherland Came Suddenly Sunday Evening
A friend of man is dead. The cheerful greeting and smiling face
of Sam Flinders will be heard and seen no more. Death came
suddenly on Sunday to take him away.
Few men have radiated more vigor and enthusiasm than Mr.
Flinders, and a glorious tribute was paid to him by Rev. George
Gilbert of Pierson, who preached the funeral sermon at the
Methodist church Wednesday morning. It was more of a visit with
his listeners than a sermon, for Rev. Gilbert had been a close
neighbor for many years of the man over whose bier he spoke. He
compared the life the departed with the work of a sculptor who
chips the finished product from the rough rock, piece by piece.
Seventy-two years it too, he said, before the Maker deemed that
work ended and called his servant.
No man in the community was better known than Mr. Flinders and
few have longer been an active part in it. He came here in 1883
and farmed for many years south of Sutherland before coming to
town. Even after he had retired, there was no actual retirement,
for Mr. Flinders continued to hustle about and often put in the
hardest of day's work. The editor of The Courier is but one among
a multitude who regrets his passing, for there was a quality in
Mr. Flinders personality that attached itself to those who met
him from day to day.
The pallbearers at his funeral were Guy Youde, Raymond Powell,
George Salzkorn, John Innes, Sherman Gilbert and August Jalas.
Interment was in Waterman cemetery.
1859 - S. C. Flinders - 1932
Samuel Challand Flinders was born December 3, 1859 in East
Bridgeport, Nottinghamshire, England, and died at his home in
Sutherland, Iowa Nov. 13, 1932, having reached the age of 72
years, 11 months, and 10 days.
In the summer of 1865, he with his parents, Maria and Henry
Flinders, came to America locating in Shabbona, Illinois, where
they remained for a period of 7 years, then moved to a farm in
Webster county, Iowa. In 1883, with a brother John Flinders and
wife, he came to O'Brien county, locating on his homestead south
of Sutherland. In 1918 he moved to the town of Sutherland, where
he resided until his death.
When a child he was baptized in the Episcopal Church of England,
and always a liberal supporter of the former Hyland church south
of Sutherland.
On October 20, 1886 he was united in marriage to Mary Dek and to
his union three children were born; a daughter, Verla May, who
preceded her father in death, and two sons.
His immediate family consisted of two brothers and four sisters,
only one of which survives, Mrs. Mary E. Hawley, of Eugene,
Oregon.
In 1912 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Azoa Broadstreeet.
He leaves to mourn his death, his widow, two sons, Arthur C. of
San Antonio, Texas, and Vernon S. of Sutherland, and three
grandchildren, Marilyn Joan, James Arthur, and Arthur Challand
Flinders.
