M. S. Draper Dies at Indiana Home - Former Sutherland Resident is Brought Here for Burial; Moved Away in 1926
M. S. Draper, a former resident of the Sutherland community, passed away in Upland, Indiana March 10, 1932 at the age of 73 years, 10 months and 3 days. He had spent the greater part of his life in the Hyland community south of Sutherland but moved to Upland, Indiana in 1926. Funeral services were held in the Methodist church at Sutherland Sunday afternoon at 2:30 with Reverend Corwin Taylor, the pastor, officiating. Rev. Taylor read the scripture. Prayer was offered by Rev. Geo. Osborne, pastor of the M. E. church at Primghar. Rev. A. Rasmussen, pastor of the M. E. church at Peterson preached the sermon and brought a hope-inspiring message from the subject, "The Great I Ams of Christ" as told by the Gospel of John. He ably told of the all-sufficient Christ. The obituary was read by Franklin Draper, who also paid tribute to his father. A men's quartet composed of Lloyd Gilbert, Robert Lee, Frank Bruner and Herman Behmer with Mrs. Bruner at the piano, sang appropriate selections. The pallbearers were Sherman Gilbert, Guy Youde, Frank Fogelman, Laurence Flinders, Sam McCulla and Fred Davis. Relatives from a distance who were here to attend funeral services were Perry Draper and Son Floyd of Pipestone, Minn., Sam Shook Jr. of Cherokee, Iowa; Franklin Draper from Leonidas, Mich.; Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Henderson and sons Percy and Merritt of Paullina, Iowa; Opal and Beatrice Henderson of Calumet and Joe Henderson of Spencer, Iowa. Interment was made in Waterman cemetery.

1858 - M. S. Draper - 1932
Merrit Simon Draper was born in Benton County, Iowa, May 6, 1858, and died at Upland, Indiana March 10, 1932, aged 73 years, 10 months and 3 days. After living several places in northwest Iowa, he moved with his parents to Cherokee county. There he met Rosa Belle Wight, and they were united in marriage on December 31, 1880. To this union were born thirteen children. Paul Brenton died in 1892 at the age of two years. The next break in the family circle was the death of Grace Elizabeth in May 1922. The wife, seven sons and four daughters survive. They are James Franklin of Leonidas, Mich.; Charles Elmer of Plainview, Texas; Mrs. L. C. Gilbert of Peterson, Iowa; Professor Olive May of Upland, Indiana; Merrit Lester, Henry Leroy, Morris Vincent, Stanley Dewey of Sutherland, Iowa; Wesley of Brooklyn, New York; Mrs. Ernest Lindell of Kinzua, Pennsylvania and Esther Edith of Upland, Indiana. Besides the children there are twenty-five grandchildren, three brothers, James of Cherokee, Iowa; Perry of Pipestone, Minn. and Nathan of Canada, two sisters, Mrs. Olive Riddle of California, and Mrs. Martha Johnson of Kansas, numerous other relatives and a host of friends left to mourn their loss in his departure.

In 1881 the deceased moved to O'Brien county and purchased a farm in Waterman township, which he improved and made his home until he retired and moved to Upland, Indiana, to live with his daughter, May, in 1926. He was descended from Puritans and Scotch Covenanters, and from Revolutionary stock. He had the same strength of religious convictions that marked his forbearers. He was converted in Cherokee, Iowa, as a young man, and united with the Baptist church. A little later he transferred his membership to the United Brethren church, which was nearer his home. After he moved to O'Brien county he became a charter member of the M. E. Class that was formed at the Bradstreet schoolhouse. Later he was active in building the Hyland church. He was trustee and Sunday School superintendent for years, always a loyal supporter of the church and pastor. In 1891, during a revival held by Rev. Rinehart Hild, the pastor, he sought and obtained the blessed experience of heart purity as a second definite work, and was an exponent of that gracious doctrine throughout the rest of his life. It was not church membership he valued, so much as the real heart experience of conscious fellowship with God.

In 1926 he united with the Free Methodist church, of which he continued a member till his decease. His life speaks for itself. He was an affectionate husband, a kind father, a loyal neighbor and friend, a respected citizen, a faithful church member, and above all, a decided thoroughly consecrated Christian who sought to do all to the glory of God, and always exalted the Christ who had done so much for him. He has reached his crowning day. His works do follow him.

Funeral services were held at the home in Upland, Indiana at 10:30 Saturday in charge of Rev. Jesse Fox, pastor of the M. E. church. Dr. A. L. (continued on back page [p. 6]) Shute, professor of Bible, read Revelations 20 to 21. Dr. George Evans led in prayer. Two songs, "Jesus Lover of My Soul" and "When the Roll is Called up Yonder" were sung. Rev. Fox brought a short and appropriate message from the test, "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness which the Lord the righteous judge, shall give me at that day, and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing." Dr. R. L. Stuart spoke a few appropriate words in closing the services. The remains were sent to Sutherland, Iowa where funeral services were held Sunday. Interment was made in the Waterman cemetery at Sutherland.

Echo of Accident Near Primghar Reaches Court
According to the Sioux City Journal, suit has been brought in court against Rev. Robert Cowling by the administrator of the estate of Louis Reimers, who lost his life in a collision of automobiles near Primghar late last summer. The Journal says:
"A counterclaim for $37,140 has been filed in district court by Rev. Robert Cowling, 522 Center street, pastor of St. Paul's Episcopal church here, in the suit brought against him by George Swaine, Moneta, Ia., as administrator of the estate of Louis Reimers, for $23,800, for Reimers' death in an automobile accident. Rev. Mr. Cowling states that in addition to his Sioux City charge he is pastor of Calvary chapel, Morningside, Trinity church at Mapleton, and St. George's church at Lemars. He alleges that on August 27, 1931, while riding with his wife, Mrs. Florence Cowling, and his daughters, Marjorie and Edytha, in his automobile driven by another daughter, Stephanie, the car and one driven by Reimers collided near Primghar, Iowa. He alleges that his wife and daughters, Stephanie and Marjorie, have assigned their claims to him. He blames Reimers, who was fatally injured, for the accident. The pastor states he suffered concussion of the brain and was unconscious for 10 days. He avers that he never will have the vigorous, active mind that he possessed prior to receiving the injuries and that he suffers from loss of memory. He is asking for $16,640 for his own injuries and damages to the automobile. Mrs. Cowling suffered a wrenched back and other injuries, has not the full use of her right arm and will have to undergo an operation for injury to her right knee, the pastor alleges and demands $7,000 on her behalf. On behalf of his daughter, Marjorie, who suffered concussion of the brain and injury to her eyesight, he demands $10,000 and for his daughter, Stephanie, who suffered from shock and injury to her nerves, he asks for $1,505. Both girls were student at Morningside college and their studies were interrupted, he alleges."

Sanborn Man Disappears
Sanborn Pioneer: Grave fears are being entertained this week concerning Fred A. Johnson, a local ex-serviceman, who has been missing from his home since last Wednesday. Contact has been made with his relatives and friends but his whereabouts still remains a mystery. The last report is that an acquaintance saw him at an oil station at Sioux Rapids, Monday afternoon. A broadcast to locate him was arranged Tuesday noon from Yankton, S. D., and it is hoped the message reached him.

Mr. Johnson is suffering from a disability alleged to have been received in the service during the World War, and as yet had not been able to secure hospital treatment or compensation. It is thought that his unforeseen absence might have been caused, either by his mental condition, or by an effort to substantiate his claim with the Veteran's Bureau, and that he might have in mind visiting either the bureau or a hospital. Anyone knowing of his whereabouts or having information that may lead to locating him should communicate immediately with the Legion Post or with his wife here.

Arthur C. Gaskill
Colome, S. Dak. Times: Arthur Cyrenius Gaskill, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Ona O. Gaskill, was born in Colome on September 14, 1917. He finished the grades of the Colome school last year and this year was a member of the freshman class of the local high school.

Arthur was baptized in the Colome Methodist church at the age of 5 years and at the age of 12 became an active member of the church, being one of the ushers during the past year. Tho but a boy, he maintained an outstanding loyalty and devotion to his Christ and his church, seldom absenting himself from the services of either church of Sunday school.

In his home life, Arthur was cheerful in the performance of his duties and devotion, always expressing in his own happy way his love for parents, brothers and sister. His pleasant greeting and happy smile endeared him to his many friends and classmates.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 in the Methodist church. Rev. H. D. Clark preached the sermon and a large choir furnished the music. A special number was sung by Miss Edith Gaskill, of Burke, a cousin of the deceased. Following the church service burial took place in the Colome cemetery.

The Times last week told of Arthur's last illness and death and the bereavement of father and mother, his brothers, Ellerton and Vincent, and sister Lorna, and the sincere sorrow of the many friends of the family who mourn the passing of this splendid boy.
