Former Sutherland Resident Dies
The following clipping, relative to the death of an old settler
of this community, is taken from the Brookings, S. D., Register.
O. A. Sutton will be remembered by many residents of Sutherland.
Orville Adelbert Sutton was born at Gilbert's Mills, Oswego
county, New York, April 8, 1842, and died at his home in Long
Beach, Calif., December 19, 1920.
His parents, Himan and Olive (Scott) Sutton, reared a patriarchal
family of twelve children, of whom Adelbert was the youngest son,
and none were left to note his passing.
In the flush of his manhood, he marched away with the "boys
in blue" to the defense of his country, enlisting August 31,
1862, at Phoenix, N. Y., in the 21st Independent Battery, New
York Light Artillery, third division, 13th army corps, later in
the 19th army corps. He served in battles at the siege of Port
Hudson, Spanish Fort and others and was discharged September 8,
1865. Previous to his departure to the front he was united in
marriage to Frances Adele Putnam, at Phoenix, N. Y., Oct. 5,
1862.
Upon his return from the army they resided in Michigan two years,
then moving to Hardin county, Iowa, where he engaged in farming
for five years. In 1872 he established a permanent home in
O'Brien county, Iowa. Here he encountered the hardships of the
pioneer, and here his family was reared, and for many years he
enjoyed the fruits of his labor, until the limitations of age of
himself and invalid wife, bade them retire from active life. To
be near their children they came to Brookings, and after the
passing of his wife he made his home with his daughter.
Subsequently he married Mrs. Rebecca Shea, who survives him, and
who lovingly and tenderly cared for him.
He is survived by four sons and two daughters, all of whom were
present at the funeral except D. C. Sutton, who lives in Canada.
Those present were L. W. Sutton, I. L. Sutton of Brookings, D. D.
Sutton of Plankinton, Mrs. F. O. Shuck of White, and Mrs. I E.
Crosser of Brookings. He leaves seventeen grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren.
Mr. Sutton was a lifelong Methodist, being a member of the M. E.
church for 61 years. He was a member of the A. F. & A. M.,
also a member of the G. A. R., belonging to the Robert L. McCook
post of Brookings.
Mrs. Sutton arrived in Brookings with the remains Saturday
evening from Long Beach, Cal., and the funeral services were held
Sunday at the Methodist church, Rev. Clifton Keagy officiating,
assisted by Rev. J. A. G. Waits. Interment was made in Greenwood
cemetery. Out of town relatives who were present at the last
rites were Mr. and Mrs. F. O. Shuck and son Everett of White, Mr.
and Mrs. D. D. Sutton of Plankinton.

I. J. Beardsley arrived Tuesday morning from Huntsville, Alabama,
accompanying the remains of his infant daughter here for burial
in Waterman cemetery. The little one was two and a half months
old and never strong, passing away last Saturday. Mrs. Beardsley
was unable to come and for this reason Mr. Beardsley returned
home Wednesday.

Bossert - Jackson
The following article, relating to the marriage of Miss Eleanor
Bossert, is taken from the Sheldon Sun. Miss Bossert is well
known here.
On January 12, at high noon, the home of the bride's sister, Mrs.
Kenneth H. Rerick at Primghar, was the scene of a pretty wedding
when Miss Margaret Eleanor Bossert became the bride of Lewis Hill
Jackson, of Emmetsburg, Iowa. A company of relatives and intimate
friends were present to witness the ceremony at which Rev.
Hopkinson, pastor of the Methodist church, presided. The bride
wore a handsome wedding gown, of white organdie and lace and
carried a shower bouquet. There were no attendants.
Mrs. R. H. Schalekamp of Sheldon played a number of piano
selections following the ceremony while congratulations were
being extended to the bride and groom, after which the wedding
dinner was served. An attractive color scheme of pink and white
was carried out throughout the home with smilax and pink roses
forming the floral decorations.
Mr. and Mrs. Jackson left immediately for Emmetsburg, Iowa, where
they will be at home after February 10. Mrs. Jackson, for more
than two years past has been a bookkeeper and stenographer at the
First National Bank in this city, and prior to that time held a
similar position in the First Savings Bank of Sutherland. She is
a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. I. P. Bossert of Primghar, where the
family have resided for a number of years. She has been popular
in the social circles of Sheldon and Primghar, in both of which
places she was extended numerous pre-nuptial courtesies by her
friends.
Mr. Jackson is a son of Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Jackson of Des Moines
and holds the responsible position of cashier of the Emmetsburg
National Bank. He has visited frequently in Sheldon and has
favorably impressed those who have made his acquaintance.
