Death Summons Two Pioneers - Passing of Nicholas Litzel
and Thomas J. Butler Removes Two Old Settlers - Each Nearly 80
Years Old
Nicholas Litzel
Nicholas Litzel was born in Egleheim-on-Rhine-fouse, Germany,
March 25, 1839, and died in Sutherland, Iowa, December 24, 1917,
aged 78 years, 8 months, and 30 days.
In the year of 1861 Mr. Litzel was married to Miss Philippina
Herman. To this union were born twelve children, eleven of whom
are still living. One died in infancy.
The above is a brief outline of the life of a man who lived
beyond the allotted time of threescore years and ten, but it does
not tell how he and his devoted wife, with three small children
left the home country, severing all family ties, and came to the
United States where they started a new home in the state of
Pennsylvania, enduring all the hardships and trials that go with
such moves. In 1871 they moved again, coming to Dubuque, Iowa,
where they lived eight years, then came to O'Brien County, first
living on what is known at the Waterhouse place, then moving to
the farm, part of which is now owned by the youngest son, John.
Mr. Litzel knew Sutherland in its infancy, seeing the first store
erected near his own farm. This same farm afterwards being
divided and subdivided into what is now "East Side." He
was ever ready to tell incidents of our little city, whose people
will mourn the passing away of this man who helped to make the
history of the place.
He greatly mourned the death of his wife which occurred on
January 7, 1911. Since that time he has lived the greater part of
the time with his daughter, Mrs. D. W. Parks, being there at the
time of his death, which came suddenly and as a great shock to
his children and friends.
The children left to mourn the death of their father are: Mrs.
Mary Jass of Minneapolis; Mrs. Anna Heyner, Brookings, South
Dakota; Mrs. Susie Wright, Everly, Iowa; Mrs. Lena Parks,
Sutherland; Mrs. Lizzie Kopp, Sutherland; Mrs. Josie Ewing, and
Mrs. Margaret Brown of Ryegate, Montana; Lewis Litzel of White
Rock, South Dakota; George Litzel of Ryegate, Montana; John
Litzel of Sutherland and Miss Bertha Litzel of Sioux City, Iowa.
