Edith Anna Bradstreet - Aged 3 years, 3 months, 16 days
Little Edith Anna Bradstreet only child of Mr. and Mrs. f. A. Bradstreet was born November 8, 1913, and died January 24, 1917, after only a few days of sickness, death resulting from a complication of Quinsy and La Grippe.

Short funeral services were held at the home Saturday afternoon, Jan. 27, 1917, after which the beautiful little form was laid to rest in Waterman cemetery. The neighborly sympathy of all is extended to the family especially the mother who because of sickness was unable to leave the home.

Mrs. H. N. McMaster and Mrs. Geo. B. Flinders sang and Rev. Willis spoke briefly on "The Place of the Child in Christianity."

At such a time how comforting are the words of the Great Teacher, "Of such is the kingdom" and "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God." No such place is given to childhood - no such promise given to humankind outside of the Bible and the Christian religion.

This beautiful baby life was so precious, so fraught with blessings to her parents that she seemed a flower of paradise permitted to bloom for a brief season by their side, then recalled to its nature skies, leaving the earthly road for them dark and lonely indeed!

And when the messenger came from the unseen lands to claim the little darling as his own:
"She only crossed her little hands,
She only looked more meek and fair,
We parted back her silken hair,
White buds, the summer's drifted snow,
We wove the roses round her brow,
Wrapt her from head to foot in flowers,
And thus she went out from this world of ours."

Six Happy Hearts Now Beat As Three - Wedding Bells Ring for Three Couples During Past Week - All Popular Young People

Noethe - Cooper
Miss Inis Mary Cooper and Mathias J. Noethe were united in the holy bonds of matrimony on Wednesday morning, Feb. 14, at 9:30 o'clock at the Sacred Heart Church in Sutherland, Rev. Wendal officiating, a number of friends being present at the happy event.

The bride was beautifully gowned in white cashmere, trimmed in gold lace and satin, and carried a bouquet of white and pink roses. Miss Lorene Noethe, a sister of the groom, was bridesmaid and wore a dress of pink messaline, trimmed in georgette crepe and lace and carried a bouquet of red and white carnations. Charles Kontz, of Alton, a cousin of the groom, acted as best man.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Cooper and is popular and well known. The groom is the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Noethe and is a young man of honor and has a host of friends.

After the ceremony a reception was held at the groom's home. At 5:00 o'clock dinner was served to one hundred and thirty relatives and friends. The dining room was beautifully decorated in red and white hearts. The evening was spent in dancing and card games. The young couple were the recipients of many costly and beautiful gifts. They will make their home on a farm three and one half miles northeast of Sutherland and will be at home to their many friends after March first.

Those who attended the wedding from a distance were: Mr. and Mrs. P. M. Kontz and son, Arthur, Mrs. P. J. Kontz and sons, Leo and Albert, Will Noethe, John Arens and Joe Even, all of Alton, and Mrs. T. J. Kennedy and Henry Cooper of Cherokee.

Shouse - Salzkorn
A wedding of interest of the past week took place at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Salzkorn, 3 miles south of Sutherland, at high noon on Wednesday, Feb., 14, when their daughter, Laura May, was given in marriage to George Raymond Shouse.

Many relatives and friends were present for the vent to wish the happy couple well in the "united state" into which they were assisted by the officiating clergyman, Rev. F. Lonsdale, pastor of Calumet and Hyland M. E. churches. The bride was prettily attired in white silk. After the ceremony the guests retired to the dining room where an elaborate wedding dinner awaited them. The home was very tastily decorated for the occasion. A short time was spent in viewing the many fine and useful gifts, received by the bridal couple.

A large company of Hyland's young folks gathered in the evening for an old fashioned "charivari" and their example was followed on Thursday night be the married folks of that community.

As far as we know, Mr. and Mrs. Shouse were able to survive the shocks and are still alive, and expect to move onto a farm shortly, 2-1/2 miles south of Sutherland, where they will be at home to their wide circle of friends who extend their hearty felicitations.

On Sunday afternoon, Feb. 18, at 4:00 o'clock at the Church of Christ in Sutherland occurred the marriage of Miss Gertrude Loretta Cooper to Eber A. Salser, W. H. Hardaker, the pastor, performing the ceremony in the presence of only a few relatives and friends.

The bride wore a beautiful gown of nun's veiling and white satin, trimmed in gold lace and carried a bouquet of American Beauty roses. The groom was attired in blue serge.

The bride and groom were tendered a reception at the home of the bride Monday evening, commencing with a sumptuous wedding dinner which was served at 5:00 o'clock to which about fifty relatives and friends were invited. The rooms and tables were decorated in red and white, cupids and hearts. Music was furnished during the early part of the evening by Miss Bernice Hanover. The remainder of the evening was spent in dancing with music furnished by Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Hammer. A large number of beautiful gifts were showered on the young couple by their many friends.

The bride is the second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Cooper, who live in Grant township and is very well qualified to occupy the station in life which she has chosen. The groom has lived in this community for the past four years and is a young man of ability.

The young couple will go to housekeeping in Sutherland about March 1st in the A. J. Innes property, across from the school building. They take with them into their new life together the best wishes of a host of friends.

Farewell Receptions
A large number of old friends and neighbors gathered at the Hyland Y.M.C.A. annex at the noon hour on last Thursday for a dinner in honor of the Henry Burmeister, Howard Champion, Guy Warren and Chris Montgomery families, as all of them expect to move from the community soon. After the bountiful dinner had been served, Rev. Lonsdale, pastor of the Hyland church, briefly spoke words of appreciation of the fellowship and friendship that all in the Hyland community had enjoyed with these splendid families. Guy Youde and Mrs. Austin also spoke, after which gifts of silverware were made to each of the four families. Their many friends are loath to part with these good people and their best wishes will follow them to their new home.

A farewell surprise was held at the home of W. A. Brady Saturday evening, Febr. 17th, in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hill. The former neighbors of this worthy couple gathered there to spend the last social evening with them, as they will soon move onto the farm they recently purchased near Volga, S. Dak. The evening was spent with card games, music and conversation. Later in the evening a very delicious supper was served, after which Mr. Charles McCormack, in a few well chosen words, presented Mr. and Mrs. Hill with a beautiful rug as a token of the esteem in which they were held by the assembled guests. Mr. McCormack reminded them that they were leaving the scenes of their childhood and told them that in the years to come these scenes would remain dearest to them, and that the new friendships they would form would never take the place of the friendships they were leaving behind. After wishing Mr. and Mrs. Hill joy and prosperity in their new home, the guests departed, hoping the time would not be far distant till they should all meet again.
