Art Stewart of Liberty township will go to the Philippines to
work for his Uncle Samuel in putting down the rebellion. He has
enlisted with the 32nd Infantry and is now at St. Paul. Art will
make an excellent soldier.
Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Worden were greatly pleased last week to receive
a letter from their son Hugh with the information that he was in
god health and expected to leave the Philippines with his
regiment, the 13th Minnesota volunteers, soon. The regiment is
now enroute to San Francisco and will reach this country early
next month. Mr. and Mrs. Worden had been very much worried for
his safety for some time and had not received any tidings from
him. Hugh has suffered some trouble wit a broken ankle and was in
the hospital for a time, but was all right at the time the letter
was written. He will no doubt pay his parents a visit upon his
return.
Obituary
Mrs. A. F. Upham
Alvira Johnson was born February 10, 1847, in Hudson, Summit
county, Ohio, and died at her home in Onawa, Iowa, August 17,
1899, aged 52 years, 6 months and 7 days. Her early childhood
days were spent in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, where she lived with her
parents until 1867 when she was married, May 10th of that year,
to Alfred F. Upham. In the fall of the same year they came west
to the then frontier country at Boone, Iowa. In 1883 they moved
to Paullina, Iowa, where they lived until 1895 when they came to
Onawa, where she has since resided with the exception of one year
which was spent at Carroll, Iowa.
Mrs. Upham suffered much from ill health, having scarcely seen a
day free from pain for many years. Yet she was sustained in her
afflictions by an unfaltering Christian trust which was her
comfort and hope during her last few weeks of life. She leaves to
mourn their loss besides her husband, two sons, Terry E. and
Newell L. Upham who reside at the parental home in Onawa, and one
daughter, Mrs. D. Edna Hakes, of Newcastle, Nebraska.
The funeral services and interment took place at Paullina, Iowa,
Rev. F. W. Ginn of Eagle Grove, Iowa, officiating, on last
Saturday afternoon.
