A long spell of fine weather is now in order.

Senator ALLISON spoke at Sheldon last night.

Several carloads of cattle were shipped from this place Tuesday.

Land seekers are numerous, and our land agents are correspondingly pappy (sic).

J.F. SHEPARD opened his new temperance billiard hall last Tuesday.  He has a good room and has it fixed up in good style.

Some of our farmers are exhibiting their seed corn in town.  It is in order for them to save plenty of good ears before it is spoiled by frost.

Mr. and Mrs. C.W. INMAN rejoice over the advent of a “bran new” 10 pound boy since Sunday, September 14th.  Mother and child are doing finely.

Business is beginning to boom, and the result is that our merchants have donned a pleasant smile.  The smile is worn in addition to their usual wearing apparel.

It is rumored that the members of the Paullina base ball club are willing to give $50 just to see the Sutherland boys defeated.  It might be well for them to put up their money and get our boys to cover it, and then have
another game.  Our boys have always used the Paullina club first-class, and all would now be well if our boys had come out second best in both games played.

Saturday was a gala day for our merchants.  Twenty-five farmers teams were counted hitched on our streets at one time – Calliope Independent.Only twenty-five teams on your streets Saturday, and yet you call it a “gala day!”  Come down to Sutherland some Saturday and we can show you at least three times that number, and our merchants would not consider it an unusually lively day either.

The Rescue Hook and Ladder Company will have a grand ball at Sheldon’s Hall Friday evening, September 26th.  Good music will be provided.  Proceeds of the dance will be used in defraying the expenses incurred in organizing and equipping the company.  Tickets for dance and supper, $1.75 per couple. Supper at the Reager House.  All should turn out and help along the enterprise.

Independent Caucus.
A caucus of the Independent voters of Waterman township will be held at the office of F.W. NICHOLAS in Sutherland, Friday evening Sept. 19th, at 7:30 for the purpose os (sic) selecting 4 delegates to attend the county convention at Primghar Saturday, Sept. 20th.  A full attendance is desired.By Order Of Com.
