Sutherland Courier
Sutherland, O’Brien co. Iowa
November 21, 1884

T. SHEPARD started for Kansas Tuesday evening and expects to be absent all winter.

J.D. LAUDI, of Tama City, has been in town this week.  He is very favorably impressed with Sutherland and considers her growth almost magical.

Tuesday afternoon a search warrant was issued by Justice INMAN, and placed in the hands of E.T. CLEVELAND, constable, with orders to search J.F. SHEPARD’S billiard hall and see if he could find any whisky or other intoxicants.  The search revealed two kegs partially filled with whiskey and several dozen bottles of Milwaukee beer, all of which was seized and carried away by the officer.  The stuff will be condemned and destroyed.  There are a few persons in town who censure the men who were instrumental in having this warrant issued, claiming that they were interfering with other people’s business without just cause.  We fail to see it in the light.  The laws of Iowa are such that no man can traffic in liquors without committing a crime, and it is the duty of good citizens to see that criminals are prosecuted. The prohibitory law must be enforced before it is judged either good or bad. If it is found to be a good law no one will wish to see it repealed, and if found to be a bad law its repeal can be easily effected.  Let us have prohibition in Sutherland if it kills the town.
