The Villisca Review
Villisca, Montgomery co. Iowa
March 31, 1883

Our city marshall has a very disa -ecable position right now. His orders are imperative to shoot all dogs running at large without muzzles. Every dog has his friends and every dog's death brings down maledictions on the marshall, while on the other hand the city government and every citizen who owns no dog, urge him to the slaughter. "Kick me, kick my dog" is a homely old adage that will never lose its meaning while human nature remains the same as now. We are just at present trying to ran the office with out a dog of any kind, hence feel competent to give advice in a dispassionate, impartial manner on this subject. Let everybody give the marshall a fair showing and not criticize too harshly until all the facts are known in each case of dogacide. We believe he is trying to do this duty. Let the dog owners be as calm as they can and keep the dogs shady till the storm blows over. To the marshall we would say, "shoot'em easy."

~ Mr. J. H. Dalton, living southwest of town, brought to this office last Friday, a regular old historical turtle, one of these fellows you read about. It was captured by Master Willie Hook, and bears the inscription "T. P. J., 1870," AND "J. M. R., 1874." It was evidently an old settler before these characters were cut upon it's back, and with the addition of these intervening thirteen years, it's age must be something marvelous. We intended to keep it on exhibition for a few days at least, but the "condensed" thing got away from us during the night, and is probably in Ohio by this time. It is lively if it was old, and is without doubt beyond the reach of the antiquarian's knife.

DIED: - At his home, near Sciola, Thursday, May 24th ,of erysipelas, Mr. Isaac Connor, aged 72 years. Uncle Isaac Connor was born in Ohio, in the month of November, 1810. There he spent the earlier part of his life and there married. Enthused with the spirit of western emigration, he started, in the year 1853, for western Iowa, then an unsettled wilderness. He began his pioneer life on the exact spot where he died, leadinga comfortable home-like life for 30 years. Although of a rather retired disposition, still he took great interest in politics, being a warm supporter of the Anti-Monopoly creed. He was held in the highest regard by all neighbors and friends, and was considered an example of up-right and honest integrity. With his death Montgomery County loses one of its oldest landmark, on of its best farmers, and one of its truest hearted citizens. Peace to his ashes.
