Mapleton Men with the Armed Forces
Clarence Phillip Brown, son of Mr. & Mrs. Frank Brown of
Mapleton, has received a promotion to acting sergeant. He is in
the Army at Camp Tanforan, San Bruno, CA.
Word has been received from Ralph Theobald that he has been
transferred to the US Naval Armory School at Chicago. He has been
station at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station. He is a son of
Mr. & Mrs. John Theobald of Mapleton.
Home for the first time since he enlisted in the Navy three years
ago, Gene Bales is spending a 20-day leave here with his parents,
Mr. & Mrs. C.A. Bales. Gene is a gunner's mate, third class,
and was on the Light Cruiser Boise when it sank six Jap
ships in the early states of the Guadalcanal battle last October.
Gene escaped injuries. The Boise is now in the
Philadelphia Navy yard for repairs. It had been given up for lost
nearly a month before it steamed into this country after sinking
the six Jap ships in about 30 minutes. Gene has two brothers in
the Navy: Virg in the South Pacific and Mike at Madison, WI.
Their father served in World War I.
Pvt. Erwin Hass of the Artillery branch of the Army in Texas is
visiting here with his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. & Mrs.
Henry Noethlich. At one time he was employed by the Haubrich
Construction company in Mapleton.
Lester Theobald, son of Mr. & Mrs. John Theobald, has been
appointed overseer of a group of men who are testing planes in
the Naval Yards at Philadelphia.
Word has been received here by Mr. & Mrs. John Theobald that
their daughter, Ensign Rosina Theobald of the Naval Nursing
corps, was on a Pacific Ocean island "south of the equator
and west of the international date line." At the time the
letter was written in December, she had not reached her
destination.
Leo Jungen, son of Mr. & Mrs. John Jungen of Mapleton, left
Wednesday of last week to enlist in the Navy. He has two brothers
in the Army, William and John.
Corp. Herbert Hahn has been transferred to Fort Monmouth NJ from
Camp Crowder MO. He is in the Army Signal corps and a son of Mr.
& Mrs. Herbert Hahn Sr. of Mapleton.
Harold Martin, son of Mr. & Mrs. John Martin of Mapleton,
left Tuesday for the Great Lakes Naval Training station near
Chicago. He enlisted in the Navy shortly after returning from
California two months ago and has been visiting with his parents
and other relatives and friends here while awaiting his call to
duty.
Junior H. McBride, son of Mr. & Mrs. H. McBride of Route 1,
Mapleton, was the leader of a group of 19 Madison County, NE,
young men who left recently for the Army Induction center at Fort
Leavenworth, KS, from where they will be assigned to active duty.
The McBrides lived in Nebraska before moving to Mapleton
recently.
Raymon "Razor" Koenigs is visiting here for several
days with his Mr. & Mrs. John Koenigs. He is in the Naval Air
corps and is attending the Navy Pre-flight school in Iowa City.
Dale Jacobson expects to return to Portland ME after enjoying a
15-day furlough here with his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Ira
Jacobson. He is a radio man in the Navy. His brother, Pvt. Don
Jacobson, is now stationed at Camp White, Medford, OR. Both wish
to thank the Civic Club for the Christmas gifts they received.
1st Lt. Jack Kemp, son of Mr. & Mrs. John Kemp of Mapleton,
is visiting here for a few days. He is an instructor in the Field
Artillery center at Fort Sill, OK.
