TERRIBLE CALAMITY- A CHILD BURNED TO DEATH.
The house of Mr. Volglesang of Lincoln Township was burned on
Thursday the 7th inst., and worst of all, one of his children, a
babe about six months old, perished in the flames. Mr. V. was at
work some distance from the house, and his wife leaving her babe
in the cradle, and her two older children aged two and four years
respectively, in the house, went to a grove nearby for some wood.
By some means the children set fire to the house and before
either of the parents got there, it was too late to save
anything. Aside from the sad fate of their child, they lose
heavily. They had but recently come to the county, were well
supplied with everything necessary for comfortable living, and
had just laid in a supply of five or six cwt. of flour. All these
together with all their money are, of course, totally lost. Their
case is deserving of sympathy from us all, and as we understand
the citizens of Lincoln with commendable liberality are making
contributions for their present necessities, the people of Onawa
and vicinity will also have an opportunity of contributing for
the same purpose.
THANKSGIVING.
Pursuant to the Proclamation of Gov. Stone, appropriate services
may be expected at the Court Room on Thursday, the 28th. A sermon
will be preached and an Anthem sung.
~The District Court of Monona County is now in session, presided
over by His Honor, Judge Ford.
~The Stage route from here to Denison has been discontinuedthe
mail now coming through on horseback.
~MARRIED. At Castana, Iowa, on the 17th inst., by C. R. Searle at
his residence, Mr. Charles O. Tucker to Mrs. Josephine A. Lewis,
all of Monona county.
~The long continued magnificently glorious autumn of 1867 in
Western Iowa is the theme of the universal remark, 'The finest we
ever saw.' The man who is not satisfied with such weather is
worse than Shakespeare's, 'Fit for treason, stratagem and
spoils.'
~Persons calling at the Store of Fairchild & Douglas will see
that is has changed its location, having been removed to make way
for the Rail Road, which is coming, coming, and will be here in a
day or two. Already the snorting of the Iron Horse can be heard,
and his advent ought to be hailed with joy and a universal 'Three
times three!'
~We have within the last ten days been favored with several
displays of fireworks on the grandest scale. A prairie fire at
night, driven before a strong wind and in high grass, is a
sublime spectacle, but when it is necessary to fight the fire all
night to save houses and farms from destruction, it is paying too
dear for the show. Those who start fires at such times ought to
be held responsible for the damage.
~During last week there were several of the 'poor Lo!' family
complacently sauntering through our streets and about the stores,
evidently 'seeking what they might lay their hands on and steal
it.' One venerable 'Lo' was trying to dispose of a miserable
fish, which he had caught in some lake. He couldn't comprehend a
solitary word (?) you might say to him as to the good or bad
qualities of the fish, but when asked in plain English how much
he would take for it, 'Fish one dollar,' was his ready reply, at
the same time looking you full in the face, and rather
intelligently, too.
~IMPROVEMENTS.Our Court House has recently been undergoing
repairs inside and out, making the Court room and offices very
comfortable for business. The outside since receiving the last
coat of paint presents a decidedly better appearance, and will
now compare favorably with any one in this part of the State.
~Dr. Stebbins' new Drug Store is now nearly completed. A fine two
story brick buildingit does credit to the Doctor's taste
and enterprise.
~Messrs. Warner & Freeland's large Dry Goods and Grocery
Store is now receiving the finishing coat of paint outside, and
inside is being rapidly fitted up to receive the large stock of
Goods ready to be placed in it.
~Besides these there are numerous dwelling houses going up in all
parts of town and surrounding country, enough to satisfy anyone
that the growth and prosperity of our town and county is healthy
and permanent.
