COUNTY SPELLING CONTEST AT MALVERN
Postponed Event to Take Place at Baptist Church at Malvern on April 29
The county spelling contest, which was postponed from February 19, is to be held in Malvern on Saturday afternoon, April 29. Pupils below the ninth grade in the Mills County schools are eligible, and the rules previously announced will be observed. The prizes mentioned heretofore will be awarded.
The Baptist Church, at Malvern, has been chosen as the place for holding the event, which will commence at 2:30 o’clock and continue until the winners are determined.
The county contest is held primarily for the selection of a representative and alternate to represent Mills County at the annual State Spelling contest, which takes place during the state fair at Des Moines. The fair dates are August 23-Sept. 1. A list of the words to be used may be secured from Supt. Masters.
The prizes in the state competition, which will be governed by a rigid set of rules, follow; First, $20; Second, $15; Third, $10; Fourth to Fourteenth, inclusive, $5 each.
HETTINGER-CLANCEY
Alfred Hettinger of Silver City secured the necessary credentials at the clerk’s office on Wednesday, which authorizes the marriage of himself and Miss Arabelle Clancey. The ceremony will take place Friday evening, April 14, and the young people will live in Silver City, as the groom is in business there. The bride is employed at the Times office, and is highly esteemed by her acquaintances.
HOLD SERVICES FOR GLENWOOD VETERAN
Final Rites Observed Today for Geo. O. Donner, Who Passed Away Monday.
George O. Donner, the aged veteran, who sudden death was mentioned Monday, was buried today (Thursday). Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church in Glenwood, under the direction of the Abner Kearney Post, G.A.R. Rev. Wm. Stevenson was the officiating pastor. Music was furnished by the M.E. Church make quartet.
George O. Donner was born near Farmer City, DeWitt County, Ill., on February 18, 1837, and died April 10, 1916, aged 78 years, 1 month, and 221 days. He was married November 15, 1857, at Waterloo, Clark County, Mo., to Miss Lydia Ambrose. Eight children were born of the union, two dying in infancy, six growing to manhood and womanhood-three boys and three girls-John Donner, Burwell, Nebr; Charles, Nevada, Mo.; Mrs. Fred Mason, Alva, Okla.; Mrs. Mary Arnold, Moorestown, S.D.; Perry, Burwell, Nebr.; Mrs. Addie Tillman, Lent, Ore. These were all present except Mrs. Tillman. There are thirty grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Mr. Donner enlisted in Company K. 114th Infantry, in September, 1863, serving three years, and was honorably discharged at the close of Civil War, in August, 1865.
Mr. Donner was the last member of his father’s family. He was converted and joined the Methodist Episcopal Church at Conway, Iowa. In 1886, and has lived faithfully during 30 years. He was a long time resident of Mills County, and for the past five years a resident of Glenwood.
