THE OPINION ESTABLISHED 50 YEARS THIS MONTH
The Opinion starts out this month of April 1914 upon its fifty first year. The last issue appeared in April 1864, with Mr. Ballard as editor and publisher. Dismal civil war had then raged in our land for three years and when spring opened upon the fourth, the horizon seemed to be clearing somewhat and so continued for another year until its close and peace was restored.
From small beginnings, the paper grew gradually in business and in influence. One year later, Hon. J. Y. Stone purchased a half interest in the paper and became its editor for two years.
At almost regular intervals, the paper changed ownership. The father of Scott Robinson was owner and publisher for a number of years, then Scott himself was helmsman for some time.
For five and a half years it has been under the present management. During that time, our business has gradually increased year by year and each succeeding year until the last one has produced more than one half greater volume of business than was that of the first.
For these favors, we sincerely thank our patrons and we promise to improve the paper from time to time as circumstances will permit.
