In gratitude shown to friend in Need:
“Trouble for a minister who helped patch affairs of two of His Flock”
Rev. E. W. Thompson, the Christian minister at Glenwood was cleared this week of a charge of bribery that was hung over him over the past year, and to be free from which must bring him a gratifying sense of relief. This is the story: In the summer of 1912, while he was in charge of a church at Elliott, a widower of his congregation was sued for breech of promise by an old maid, also of his congregation. The woman asked large damages. The man sought Rev. Thompson’s aid, and he agreed to endeavor to affect a settlement what should be fair to both. The man turned $5,000 over to Rev. Thompson, and $4,000 of this was given to the woman. Later, the widower and the old maid married, and then they demanded the other $1.000 from the irate mediator. This was followed by an indictment for embezzlement tried at Red Oak this week. All three members of the Genung & Genung Law Firm at Glenwood defended Rev. Thompson, and the result was a directed verdict of dismissal of the suit, after a showing that he had spent the whole $1,000 and $15 more for legitimate expenses for effecting a settlement.
