Nebraska Couple Wed

Russell B. Carries and Georgia M. Lomg of Baraba, Nebraska were united in Wedlock Monday evening at the Congregational Parsonage by Rev. I. D. Stone. The young people were accompanied by their parents.

R.M. Skaggs and Miss Jane George, both of Calhoun, Missouri were married recently at Clinton, where they went for a quiet ceremony, and to give the slip to their home folks. Mr. Skaggs is 71, a former resident of Center Township and well known to many Mills County people. His bride is 66, a sister and housekeeper for her brother, who is postmaster at Calhoun. Their marriage was quite a surprise to their friends. Mr. Skaggs has property at Calhoun, and they will live there.

Sarah M. Phipps widow of Charles M. Phipps, died July 19th at her home in Glenwood, age 59 years, 1 month and 9 days, and her funeral was held on Thursday from the Methodist Church. Mrs. Phipps was born in Mills County, and her life was spent here. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Rains, who were pioneers in Rawles Township. She and Mr. Phipps were married September 26, 1878, and three children were born to them; Everett G., now of Omaha, Roscoe R., and Ethel M. Her married life was spent on their farm in Center, now owned by George Phelps. This community was adjacent to the village of Hillsdale in its most prosperous days, and Mrs. Phipps was identified closely with the church work and social life of that neighborhood. She joined the Methodist Church in early life, and was a faithful member and attendant until her death. She retained a warm regard for Rev. C. M. Ward, a former pastor of the Glenwood Church, and he came here from Grand Junction to conduct her funeral. Mr. Phipps died January 29, 1901. In 1907, she sold her farm and moved to Glenwood, first buying a home on North Vine Street and later on Locust Street. She had also lived in Glenwood two years previous to this time to give her children the advantage of the Glenwood Schools. Her health was normally good until July 3rd of this year. She suffered a severe attack of heart trouble on this day, and made no hopeful recovery to the time of her death. Among those from away who came to Glenwood, and to attend her funeral, were her brother, Al Rains, of Silver City, and his daughter Cecil; her nephew Claude Rains and wife of Silver City, and her nieces, Claude Whiting, and Maude Rains of Whiting. She also had a brother, Wes Rains in California, a sister, Mrs. Spencer Boyd at Chelan, Washington, and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Marion Rains at Garfield, Kansas.
