Happy Occasions Among Town and Country Folk. Golden
Wedding Anniversary.
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Tandy, 652 N. "A" Street, celebrated
their 50th wedding anniversary, Friday, September 7, 1917.
The guests were invited to assemble at the Central M.E. Church,
which is the church home of the honored couple. A most pleasant
time was spent informally in the parlors of the church, talking
over reminiscences before the call was given to coming to the
dining room. The dining room was tastefully and attractively
decorated--the table was in the form of a rectangle--the color
scheme of old gold was carried out. Baskets of marigolds and
golden rod were placed on the table alternately. Large bouquets
were seen all about the room and a bank of flowers around the
platform made a beautiful floral display. At 12:30 o'clock the
party marched to the dining room, the march being played by a
great-niece, Miss Myrl Tandy. The bride and groom of 50 years led
the procession to the nuptial board followed by their pastor and
wife, Rev. and Mrs. Grigsby, then the children and grandchildren,
the brothers and sisters of the bride and groom, the nieces and
nephews, other relatives and friends followed. About seventy sat
down to enjoy the four course dinner, which was the hospitality
of the bride and groom. The waiters were selected from the Sunday
School class, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Anderson, Mr. and Mrs. Robert
Maffin, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Harvey. The after dinner talk was
given by Rev. Grigsby, who concluded by presenting the many and
beautiful presents. There is a remarkable record in this family
tree. The father and mother of the groom, Mr. and Mrs. Calvin
Tandy, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary; the oldest
sister and her husband of Oregon, Mr. and Mrs. Thompson
Remington, had the same grand privilege and the brother just
older, the late W. T. Tandy, and wife celebrated their fiftieth
anniversary, March 28, 1916; Henry Tandy and wife is the fourth
couple to enjoy such a celebration. Henry Tandy was born in Holt
County, MO, March 5, 1848. At two months old, he moved with his
parents to Appanoose County, IA. When 3 years of age, he came to
Mahaska County, where he has resided, near Oskaloosa, ever since.
Eight years ago, he moved with his family to Oskaloosa. Martha
Boston was born west of oskaloosa on the Wilson Farm, January 1,
1849. She was united in marriage to Henry Tandy, September 7,
1867. Four children were born to this union. One son, John Calvin
deceased. He was married and lived to be about 30 years of age.
Three daughters, Mrs. Joseph Butler, Mrs. F. A. Oswandel and Mrs.
Robert Hamilton, all living on farms near the parental home, and
four grandchildren. The day was bright and pleasant--all were
glad to be present. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Tandy received many
congratulations over the phone, by letters and by callers all
through the day.
