Mrs. Sarah A. FRANCIS, formerly a resident of Winterset, but who
for a number of years resided in Ellensberg, Washington, died in
that city Saturday. The remains will be brought to this city for
interment. Mrs. FRANCIS has a son, Calvin FRANCIS, living in
Earlham; her other two children, Will FRANCIS and Miss Emma
FRANCIS were with her at the time of her death, and will
accompany the body to Winterset.
Ed DAVIS from near New Virginia, has moved on the place recently
purchased of T. J. ALLEN and his brother, John DAVIS, from
Griswold, has moved on the old William ALLEN farm.
J. W. MCKINNEY died Tuesday at his home in the N. E. part of the
city of pneumonia, after an illness of several weeks duration. He
was 55 years of age. Mr. MCKINNEY is survived by his wife and six
children.
Married at the home of the brides sister, Mrs. Clarence
THORNGURG at 4:00 Monday afternoon, Mr. Joseph J. EARP and Miss
Verdie BARDRICK, Rev. BENNETT officiating. They will live at Van
Meter.
Lewis CRAWFORD, one of the old settlers of Madison county, died
Thursday morning at the old home farm in Madison township. He was
87 years old last Monday. Mr. CRAWFORDS son, D. V. CRAWFORD
lived on the farm with him.
Isaac ALLEN, a former resident of this county who has been
residing in Council Bluffs for the past 25 30 years, died
last Saturday morning at the home of his sister, Mrs. John
LITTLE, near Elm Grove. The remains were shipped to Council
Bluffs on Monday of this week for burial. He came back here some
5 or 6 weeks ago to visit relatives and friends.
John DEVINE was born in Longport, Ireland, in 1825 and died on
March 11, 1908 at the age of 83 years, 8 month and 10 days. Mr.
DEVINE came to America at the age of 19. he was married to Ellen
OLAUGHLIN in Fondulac, Wisc., at the age of 22 years. To
this union were born six children, 5 girls and 1 boy. He was a
soldier in the war of the rebellion, a volunteer of Co F, 45th
regiment of Wisconsin. He received his discharge at Nashville,
July 17, 1865, having served his country one year. He came with
his family to Madison County in 1875, where he made his home
until his death. Mrs. DEVINE died in 1888. His daughter,
Catherine, died in the same year. He was a Christian, being a
member of the Roman Catholic Church. He leaves 5 children, Mrs.
Cal CHURCH; Mrs. Jennie VAN METER; Susie; Mrs. J. WHITE and
Edward. He was laid to rest by the side of his wife and daughter
in Oakland cemetery.
The infant child of Will BRAWLS died Sunday and was buried
Monday at Sayre cemetery.
Crawford township: Thomas OTOOLE, an old resident of this
place, but for the last few years of Omaha, was buried in the St.
Patricks cemetery in Lee township Monday of this week.
Sarah A. GOWIN was born in Marion, Indiana, May 12, 1832. She was
married to William I. GORDON November 21, 1850, and departed this
live on March 12, 1908. To them were born 12 children, 7 of whom
are living and 5 are dead. She leaves 2 sisters and 1 brother.
Interment is at the Gordon Cemetery.
Married at Winterset, on March 18th were Albert HOLMES and Miss
Ethel HERMON, both of Winterset. Officiating over the ceremony
was E. M. ATWOOD, Minister.
Ivan ROBERTS was born July 1, 1906, and died Sunday morning after
an illness of about a weeks duration. His mother (Jessie)
proceeded him by almost a year. He has been cared for by his
grandmother, Mrs. George BLACK. (burial at the St. Charles
Cemetery)
Bessie CRAWFORD, the 20 year old daughter of Mr. & Mrs.
Charles CRAWFORD, died Tuesday morning at the home in the south
west part of the city. Miss CRAWFORD had been sick but a short
time with typhoid fever. The burial was in the cemetery at
Patterson. (Montpelier Cemetery)
Dr. J. H. MACK, on of the pioneers of Madison county and founder
of the town of Macksburg, died Monday morning at this home. He
came to Madison county when he was 20 years old. Mr. MACK is
survived by his wife and four daughters, Mrs. E. L. TOWNSEND
& Mrs. L. H. HIXON, of Des Moines; Mrs. Fred HERRON of
Macksburg and Mrs. M. K. FARNSWORTH of Wichita, Kansas, all of
whom were home during his fatal illness. (burial at Moon
