James LORIMOR was called to Diagonal by the death of his brother on Thursday morning. The deceased was formerly a resident of Madison County.

Colonel LOTHROP celebrated his 89th birthday on Monday evening by inviting a dozen or more of his old time friends to spend the evening with him at the home of his son-in-law, W. S. WHEDON.

Collins LIKES, son of Dr. & Mrs. LIKES, of Des Moines, died in that city on Monday of heart disease. He was 17 years old and was born in Winterset while the Dr. and family lived here. He was a bright boy and his many friends will hear of his death with sorrow. He had been ailing for several years.

Invitations are out for the marriage of Miss Mae FLEMING to Mr. Edward WILDER, of Naples, Texas on Wednesday evening at 6:00.

East Peru: Petty thieving in the west end of town is becoming a nuisance. The other night someone stole all the bread out of the kitchen of Frank MCKIBBEN, and also milked their cow so dry that the twin babies had to do without their breakfast. Mr. DUNN'S people, weunderstand, has meat stolen from their summer kitchen one night recently.

G. W. HUBBELL, of Des Moines, formerly of St. Charles, died at his home on Saturday evening. His remains were brought to St. Charles on Monday, via the C. B. & Q. (railroad) and the funeral was conducted at the M. E. Church by Rev.BARICK. he leaves a wife to continue the battle of life alone.

Death has again visited our community twice in one week, as Miss Janie WILCOX passed away on July 12th and was laid to rest in the Roberts Cemetery (Adair County); also, Will SAWYER died on July 15th, after a lingering illness of several years, passed to the life beyond, where sickness and pain never comes, the Rev. MORRIS preached the funeral service on Sunday.

On Wednesday evening at 7:00 at the home of Mr. & Mrs. W. F. LOVE, their daughter, Leona, was united in marriage to Herbert WILLIAMS. They will live in Macksburg.

Mrs. SHAFFER, an aged woman, living with relatives near Peru, died Monday. Her husband was a mail carrier for a long time on the Macksburg route.

We learn that Judge APPLEGATE of Guthrie center took his son, a young man about 20, to the insane asylum last week for treatment.

Mr. TROUB, (John) an old and respected citizen, died at his residence in the east part of the city on Tuesday evening. The funeral occurred Thursday morning conducted by Father ALBERS of the Catholic Church, of which the deceased was a life long member. Mr. TROUB came to the county many years ago and was employed in building the first court house, being a skillful and experienced stone cutter. He lived on a farm in Union Township for many years, moving to Winterset three or four years ago. He was 82 years old. (burial at the Winterset Cemetery)

E. G. NICHOLSON died at his home on West Green St. on Saturday afternoon at 6:00. For eight months Mr. NICHOLSON had been confined to the house and for the past four months had not been out of his bed. He suffered excruciating pain most of the time from disease of the prostrate gland. The funeral occurred on Sunday afternoon at 3:00. He was one of the early settlers of the county, moving to the north part of the county from Mahaska County before the war. He was married to Isabel HAINES in Mahaska County before coming to Madison County. In 1872 he moved to Winterset. (burial at the Winterset Cemetery)

William MERCER was arrested by Sheriff DOCKSTEADER on the 28th of June on the banks of Coon River where he was fishing and brought to the city and placed in jail. He will have to remain there over a year unless Gov. CUMMINS lets him out. MERCER is nearly blind and is subject to hemorrhages. His friends say he has consumption also. MERCER was convicted of bootlegging last year in November and received a jail sentence on 2 or 3 counts that in all amounted to over a year. (in jail) He agreed to leave the country and did go to the coast. He was taken ill there and being almost totally blind, came home.

Married: At the parsonage of the Christian Church, by Rev. E. E. BENNETT, on July 4h, at 10:00 a.m., Mr. Charles C. KLINGMAN and Miss Mary A. HUFFMAN.

The 4th of July was a sad day to many of the North Branch people on account of the sudden death of Mrs. Mabel DEWITT, (w/o Jesse J., married 1-28-1903, M/C)daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Seth BRITTAIN. Thus one has gone from our number, so young and promising, before the 20th year of her age. (burial at the North McDonald Cemetery)
