Winterset is to have a public library. Andrew CARNEGIE has donated $10,000 for the building and the Bevington heirs have donated the site. The city will assume operating expenses.
Walter B. GARRETT was born in Sandusky, Ohio, November 21, 1821 and departed this life at the home of his son, George H. GARRETT, February 11, being at his death, 82 years, 2 months and 21 days old.
He was married in New Martinsburg, Ohio to Matilda A. FISHBACK on January 8, 1845. To this union thirteen children were born, eight sons and five daughters, all of whom are living except two daughters.
Mr. Garrett moved from Ohio in 1865 and settled in Madison county, where he has since resided. Burial was made at the Winterset Cemtery.
Ellis CREGER has opened a lunch parlor in the St. Nicholas hotel building.
Mrs. HULBERT, wife of James HULBERT, died at their home on the A. D. FLETCHER farm in Jefferson township on Friday, February 12th. Mrs. HULBERT, whose maiden name was WHITE, was born in New York state in 1864. She leaves a husband, seven children and an aged mother, Mrs. John MOORE of this city, from whose home funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon and the interment was made in the Hooten cemetery in Lincoln Township.
Ed CONNORAN has announced his candidacy for the office of county recorder.
At the home of Mr. & Mrs. Phil REINMUTH of Hebron, Tuesday at high noon, occurred the marriage of their daughter Julia to George GILLESPIE.
Mr. C. W. MYERS and wife are rejoicing over a new girl at their house.
George BLACK, a pioneer of South township, and for the few years past, a resident of this city, died suddenly about 6 o'clock on Tuesday evening.
He had eaten a more than usual harty supper and was apparently feeling much better that he had for some weeks, but while walking across the floor of his room, fell and almost instantly expired. (Burial was made in the St. Charles cemetery)
The nine day old infant daughter of Mr. & Mrs. S. L. LAWRENCE, was buried on last Thursday afternoon.
Jud NORRIS and Roy CLINE of Douglas township, received minor injuries in a team runaway.
Born on February 15th to Henry and Effie B. (Owens) ROBSHAW, a son, William.
L. S. RAY, administrator of the estate of Mrs. Isabella LATHRUM, late of South township, was having the real estate appraised last week preparatory to offering it for sale. The gentlemen charged with that duty were James KALE, of Scott township; J. W. CORSBY and R. T. NICOSON, of South township.
Born on February 7th, to H. D. KENT and wife (Mary O. RODRICK) of Winterset, a son.
Wednesday night about 10 o'clock occurred the death of Mrs. (Almira) GORDON. The funeral services were held on Friday at the Methodist church and the remains were interred at the McGinnis cemetery. (wife of J. D. GORDON)
At the Baptist parsonage, on Wednesday afternoon, February 17th, Mr. H.(Harvey) S. BEESON and Miss Minnie (Belle) HAXTON, of Earlham, were united in marriage.
Little Ruth (Marie) HOLMES of Truro died Saturday morning, February 6th, aged 1 year, 6 months and 24 days. The funeral was held from the Christian church on Sunday morning and the remains were interred at the Hartman cemetery. (daughter of Isaac Earl and Florence R. HOLMES)
Born on February 11, 1904, to William H. and his wife, Pearletta (St. John) SHEARER, of Grand River twosnhip, a girl, Ora M.
On Saturday afternoon, the genial A. C. FOSTER was accommodated with office room in the city bastile. Some time during the evining the lock was broken and the place vacated. Whether or not the escape was accidental or intended was not developed.
