Marriage licenses have been issued to the following during the
past week:

David A. WHITE and Mary Alice SCOTT
D. MCMILLEN and Jennie MYERS
S. B. WINCHESTER and Rebecca C. YOUNG.
On the 23rd of December, Charles J. BUCHANAN and Miss Mary C.
MCDOWELL, both of Madison county, were married at the residence
of the officiating minister, the Rev. N.M. MCDOWELL in Indianola.
Mr. STANFIELD has bought the boarding house west of the hotel and
will open it up himself, soon.
The thermometer showed twenty-two degrees below zero, Wednesday
morning.
H. ADKINSON has entered into partnership with Hon. D. N. HETZER,
of Great Bend,Kansas.

The A.O.U.W. at their last meeting, elected the following
officers for the ensuing term:

The county treasurer M. A. KNIGHT is back from Colfax much
improved in health.
John HENKLE, who had a severe fall several weeks ago, is
gradually improving.
Major Eli WILKINS is spending the holiday at his old home in Ohio
The members of Madison Lodge 135, I.O.O.F., assisted by the
Macksburg and St. Charles lodges, will have a public installation
of officers at the court room on next Tuesday afternoon at 2:30
o'clock. The public is cordially invited to attend. There will be
a parade proceeding the ceremony.
Alfred BRITTAIN, one of the most successful farmers of Jefferson
township, started last Tuesday for a months' visit to Montana,
Indian territory and Texas.
Twenty-four years ago, the Madisonian began its
existence as a six column newspaper, it is now a six column
newspaper, but issued twice a week, instead of weekly.
Mrs. George CLEMENTS of Madison township, died from the effects
of a tumor, which first appeared on her neck.
The young folks in the north part of the county and near
Boonville, celebrated the outgoing year by a surprise party at
Harry GUTSHALL'S.
There was a family reunion at Mr. Jacob LEINARD'S in Lincoln
township on New Year's day. The following guests were present:
Messrs and Mesdames L. THORNBURG, J. W. LEINARD, M. C. LEINARD,
Joe M. CLARK, L. V. DARNALL; also, Miss Sophie LILLIE and Tinie
THORNBURG, Minnie and Frank DARNALL.

The clerk issued a marriage license to L. F. KINGKANAN and Sarah
P. WHITE.
Fifty-three marriage licenses were issued by the clerk during the
last quarter of 1880.
Eddie CHAPMAN will be over from Stuart next week to take a
position in PARLIN'S shoe store.
The following deaths have been reported at the Clerk's office
since last week:

J. R. MCCALL came up and renewed his subscription for the Madisonian
for the twenty-fifth time. His son, Elmer, and a son, Robert
Herron, returned to Iowa City on last Monday, where they are
attending the State University,
J. M. ANDREWS was again appointed Deputy Treasurer for the
ensuing year, and his appointment confirmed by the Board of
Supervisors.

H. L. BISHIR has bought the Jap. SHELL property in the west part
of town and is now living there.
The dedication services at the Presbyterian church last Sunday
were of a very interesting character. The Rev. W. W. THORP, of
Des Moines, preached the dedication sermon. The church was
erected in 1875.
Lee LEONARD, who was shot through his right lung last Saturday
night in the south part of town, died Tuesday morning

R. H. COOPER, our very popular grain buyer, dwells in a regular
city of corn cribs. He tells us he has already over 4,300 feet in
length of the cribs and is still building. These are twelve feet
wide and eleven high.
About twenty-two below again Friday morning.
G. W. HAMPGON, who has shipped as fast as he could, also has
about 1000 feet. (of corn cribs) And yet, farmers say the corn
can hardly be missed in the country.
Tom HUDSON attended the meeting of the State Agricultural Society
in Des Moines.
Cy CLOSE was arrested by Deputy Sheriff BARE, and Constable
DEETER for the murder of L.G. LEONARD.
The Markets are as follows: Wheat 60 and 65; Corn 20; Butter 18
and Eggs 18.
GOULD & HOWELL are getting out the iron work for several
bridges to be built in the county.
William MCCLEARY and C. S. MCCLEARY of Jefferson township are
visiting their aged father in Ohio.
Adam GRAHAM, a former resident of this city, and brother of J. W.
GRAHAM, was instantly killed in a Chicago elevator on the 12th.

The Bar Docket for next months term of court is being printed at
this office.
The "Women's Christian Temperance Union" of Winterset,
has engaged Capt. LINSCOT of Michigan to deliver a series of
Temperance Lectures at the court house, beginning tomorrow
evening, the 23rd. Capt. LINSCOT comes well recommended by
sterling temperance men and women, both from this state and
from Michigan. Mrs. D. E. COOPER, Secretary.
Miss Lizzie PALMER entertained a number of her young friends in a
very happy manner Thursday night.
The Mortality record of the past eight days consists of the
deaths of James DELONG and Martin GRISWOLD.
M. B. GREEN and Miss Retta SMITH wee married Thursday night at
her father's house, Mr. Henry SMITH. Mr. GREEN is well known to
all our business men and one who is highly esteemed by all with
whom he comes in contact. The bride is a young lady of excellent
abilities and amiable disposition.
Mrs. T. THOMAS, Mr. Allen BARNETT, C. A. MOSIER, J. ANDERSON,
Rev. MCCUSKEY, G. P. RAITT, C. W. STUART and Mr. William MARTIN
were Madison county delegates to the State Temperance convention.
Rev. G. P. RAITT was appointed a member of the committee on plan
of work. Rev. Dr. MCCAUGHN was
made chairman for Madison county.
The Baptists will hold a pound sociable at the residency of Rev.
Dr. MURPHY on Thursday evening of next week.
We understand that the Buffalo mills will be ready for operation
within a month.
We have attached a paper cutter to our cylinder press. In
printing the last two pages of the semi-weekly, a sheet goes in
whole and comes out in two complete papers. Come in and see it
work.

The Citizens' National bank has put up a handsome and very
effective wire screen on the top of their counter.
There will bee preaching every night this week at the
Presbyterian church.
They have a debating society at Webster, which meets every Friday
evening. The question last night was: Resolved, That the
Republican party was, and is, the friend of the poor man. Otho
DAVIS and John PHILLIPS are the chief disputants. There ought to
be no trouble in maintaining that proposition.
Mrs. Mary LIVERMORE lectures in the Opera House, February 17th,
on "What Shall We Do With Our Daughters."
The town was flooded last Thursday with the business bulletins of
T. C. GILPIN, Real Estate Agent, issued in the form of a paper.
It contains some very interesting Iowa Statistics.
We understand Rev. H. H. BADLEY will fill the place of Rev. G. M.
JEFFERY in the Macksburg Circuit.
The masquerade dance last Tuesday night was very much of a
success. The attendance was large and in addition to those who
participated, there were probably one hundred and fifty
spectators.
